Dakota Fanning Just Put The ‘Hot’ In ‘Hot Mess’ With This Wild Feather Dress

Even though 20-year-old Dakota Fanning is best known for being one of the few child actors whose adult career has not been defined by ill-fitting leotards, it is also worth noting that she is excellent at styling herself. Or at least she’s excellent at picking stylists, which is basically the same thing when it comes down to it. Dakota proved this once again on Tuesday at the Chanel Cruise 2014/2015 photo call whilst wearing a fairly disheveled look that somehow looks incredibly put-together.

The actress wore a Chanel Spring 2014 Couture dress for the unveiling of Karl Lagerfeld‘s Chanel Cruise 2014/2015 collection, which took place on Dubai’s The Island. Dakota’s multi-colored dress featured the corseted waist that the collection was characterized by, as seen previously on both Rihanna and Keira Knightley. While we were not particularly fond of those looks, the dress worn by Dakota Fanning was made up of a more fun material that had a fair amount of movement, even when she stood still.

When you think of an event thrown by Chanel, you do not typically imagine stars with their hair all unbrushed and their makeup being a bit melty. But there Dakota is, making things somehow work between a couture dress and a counterintuitive beauty look. While I think a lot of people would chock this up to being a conventionally pretty person and “confidence,” whatever that is, I think it also has to do with the subtle way these textures all work together. The dress has a shaggy, deliberately unkempt feel to it, as does her hair; it also has a shimmery texture that matches up well with her dewy skin. Additionally, Dakota opted to keep her accessories simple: just a pair of black pumps and a little clutch at her side.

While others may not have dug the overall look, I think this outfit is a perfect example of how to avoid over-styling a statement dress like this one. Yes, her hair and makeup would be a little too casual for an awards show or a red carpet premiere, but this works so well for a (relatively) relaxed fashion event.

This is a fantastic dress! I didn’t care for this Chanel look on Rihanna or Keira, but this feathered version is fabulous. Her simple makeup, hair and shoes are perfect complements.

Agreed! I think the other ones were kind of weird because they were much more solid materials and colors, whereas this has way more movement and looks like a fun dress rather than one that’s intended to be a creepy illusion.
