Of all the people who red carpet style we frequently discuss being obsessed with, Julianne Moore is one who does not come up nearly as much as we would hope. It was therefore a nice surprise indeed when her outfit popped onto my Cannes Film Festival radar–even though the look itself wasn’t the greatest. To be fair, she’s in good company for some whack style at Cannes (though there’s been at least one win so far), but at least Moore manages to pull off a few cool aspects here.
The positively stunning actress walked the red carpet for the premiere of Mr. Turner wearing a custom Louis Vuitton gown that featured burgundy leather on top and with a diagonally-striped black embroidered satin skirt, plus a snazzy Louis Vuitton belt tied around her hips. I’m not a huge fan of LV so this whole style didn’t strike my fancy, though I was much more inclined toward her bold makeup and smooth, side-parted long bob.
Still, even though I dislike the top and feel her lower half is not dissimilar to the cake topper at a bowling alley birthday party, I admittedly enjoy some elements of this look because of her seeming lack of bra. Yes, this sounds pervy but I promise it is not nearly as much as it sounds (though yes, boobs are great and I’m probably being a little pervy here).
I am frequently a fan of outfits where (A) the wearer defies what people typically assume she “should” have on and (B) the wearer dares to go sans undergarments. I don’t mean full-on commando; seriously, I feel like there’s just so much that can go wrong with that decision. This outfit qualifies for both (A) and (B) because Moore is 53, an age many style critics and other folks assume requires some sort of old lady uniform, and because I’m pretty sure she totally did not wear a bra. Which is awesome, because wouldn’t leather be super warm already without that extra layer of fabric on your tits? Plus, I’ll be in Cannes next week and will 100% be desiring of going braless, so I was really needing a (very imaginary) buddy to step in and start that off for me. Thanks, Julianne!
In conclusion: BURN YOUR BRAS. Julianne Moore says so, sort of!
