Yesterday was the Veuve Clicquot Manhattan Polo Classic, also known as Fancy Coachella, and all the rich and famous and fancy people got together to drink Champagne, watch people play sports on horses, and stomp divots like the rich people did in Pretty Woman. At least, that was ostensibly why they were there. Really, they were all there to show off how good they are at wearing fancy, preppy summer clothes. And it turns out they are really, really good at it.
Check out the best-dressed at the Manhattan Polo Classic for some important tips on how to dress like a fancy person this summer.
Julianne Moore and Lupita Nyong’o demonstrate that navy is the best color for preppy summer dressing. Sunglasses are of course essential. Moore’s jumpsuit is tres chic, and Nyong’o kills it in her summery dress and non-frumpy sun hat. Definitely note Nyong’o's wedge shoes, which give height without running the risk of sinking into the ground like stilettos do.
Julia Restoin-Roitfeld stuck with the horsey theme with her breezy shirt. Because she is a Roitfeld, she was also able to pull off wild green shoes and messy hair and still look super fancy.
Model Behati Prinsloo got to throw out the first ball, presumably because the organizers feel bad that she is about to marry Adam Levine. She must have full-time minders around to make sure she does not get grass stains on her lovely silk jumpsuit. You do not need a full-time minder, but you do need our list of ways to keep your white pants clean this summer.
Fancy ladies are so good at wearing white! Leigh Lezark looks cool and breezy in her posh summer frock, and not like she dribbled eggs Benedict all over it at brunch. The way her clutch picks up the lattice pattern from her dress is especially cute.
Dakota Johnson is starring in the 50 Shades of Grey movie, but here she looks ready for the country club. Her dress works the same way Lupita Nyongo’s does, but not quite as perfectly. The hat is a little bit costumey, and the shoes are a bit distracting. With some different shoes and big sunglasses, this would be perfect.
Busy Phillipps is ready to stomp divots in her sturdy shoes. Seriously, if you get invited to a polo match, wear wedges. You’ll be glad when you aren’t sinking into the ground, and also they will help you keep your balance when you get totally hammered on Champagne and Hendricks gin. Wedges and an open-work white dress like this are as perfect on Phillipps as they were on Kate Middleton.
Olivia Munn wore another white, openwork dress with another pair of wedges. I like her fancy lady hair and orange lips. This seems like something a young Lucille Bluth would wear.
Genevieve Jones proves it’s even possible to wear a visible bra top to a polo match and still look like a fancypants. I’m not sold on the shiny shoes, though.
Kelly Bensimon wore all black and appears to be wearing spiky heels. Maybe she’s planning on spending the day under the big orange Veuve tents.
Rebecca Minkoff made the black work for her with a breezy, printed maxi dress. I love the off-the-shoulder cut and the way she is just boldly rocking her tan lines.
And Lupita Nyong’o again, just because if you ever need to go to a fancy polo event, you should just use her as a template. This look is perfect.
