10 Reasons Why You Should Love Your Non-Designer Purse

I love a Mulberry Bayswater tote and wouldn’t be upset if some very kind friend gifted me with a Chanel 2.55 quilted bag (it’s on my birthday list, guys), but even if I won the lottery, I don’t think I would ever want an expensive bag. Really. It’s not that I can’t justify spending an entire month’s (or two) rent on purse (or three years for a Birkin). It’s that I treat my purse like a prettier version of a plastic bag. With that comes the usual spills, tears, and filling it until the seams give out and the entire contents spill out on the street. If I got a crazy expensive purse, I would ruin it. Plus, even if I paid the equivalent of a down payment for a house for a Dior bag, I would still want another one and forever feel guilty about it. That is why I am happy with my H&M handbag, thank you very much. It cost $34.95, I can spill food in it, smear lipstick on the lining and I won’t feel guilty if I want to buy another one in red.

Here are 10 reasons why you should love your non-designer purse too:

1. You wouldn’t feel guilty when your pen explodes on the lining.

Didn’t think you had a pen in your bag because you could never find it? Well guess what, you did, and now you can’t use it because the ink is all over your purse. Get the stain remover, or throw it out, with the reassurance that a $2 pen didn’t just wreck a $2,000 purse. It destroyed a $20 one.

2. You don’t have to worry about throwing your leftover sandwich in your bag.

–and forgetting it’s there for two days. You can probably toss your bag in the wash and it will be fine, or spot treat the lining. Good luck getting rancid mayo and old rotten ham smell off your not-washable or dry cleanable leather Prada tote.

3. You won’t have a breakdown when you leave it under the table at the bar.

Don’t worry, it will probably still be there in the morning–unless another girl who had the same $50 Zara clutch thought it was her’s and went home with it by mistake.

4. You don’t have to feel guilty for not wearing it everyday.

Bored of the black one? Pick another one from your closet. You don’t have to worry about cost-per-wear when it works out to 0.003 of a cent each time.

5. –Or for getting sick of it after six months.

No matter how much that Chloé bag cost, you will want to buy another one in your lifetime. It does’t matter how classic the style or how neutral the color. You will eventually buy another one and feel totally ashamed. The shopping bug got you to buy it in the first place, and it will bite again. Pesky things.

6. You can buy it and afford to eat and go out.

You can buy the cheap bag, eat more than just rice and go out for a cocktail or two–oh, and pay your rent. Is that Fendi bag that great if you never carry it anywhere because you can’t afford anything once you pay the next instalment?

7. You can put whatever you want in it.

You can stuff that bag with literally everything but the kitchen sink (why would you need that when you have hand wipes and 3 sanitizers?) and not have to think twice about what could stain, spill, stretch or stink up the bag.

8. You won’t be pissed about the so-close-it-could-pass-as-the-real thing knock-off.

Because you own the knock-off and you didn’t have to go to some dodgy part of town to get it. You went to the mall.

9. You don’t have to worry about repairing it.

Why spend $20 to fix a broken strap when the bag cost $15? it’s not eco-friendly to throw it away, so turn it into a clutch.

10. You don’t have to worry about anyone stealing it.

Friends, family, random mugger, no one will risk jail time for your pleather tote (no matter how nice it is) You could carry $5,000 in cash in that Guess purse and chances are no one will rob you. Unless they see you putting the money in, of course.

I splurged on a bag last year and I never go anywhere fancy enough to take it out regularly. My current handbag has lipstick on the lining because the top popped off so I feel this list.
