Even Melissa McCarthy’s Oscar Nom Couldn’t Convince Designers To Dress Her Fat Body

19th Annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards - Portraits

It sucks that we can’t hear the name “Melissa McCarthy” and think only about her comedy chops and lovable characters. While she’s definitely not ashamed of her body (as she shouldn’t be), it’s super dumb that her plus size figure is such a huge part of her image. She’s not just an actress, she’s a fat actress. She’s not just hilarious, she’s big and hilarious. Our culture’s obsession with othering fat bodies causes us to think of Melissa as something totally alien from the other leading ladies in Hollywood, and unfortunately, that attitude leads to a lot of unfair bullshit. Her recent interview with Redbook gives us some insight into the politics of being fat and famous, and it’ll probably make your skin crawl. According to Melissa,

When I go shopping, most of the time I’m disappointed. Two Oscars ago, I couldn’t find anybody to do a dress for me. I asked five or six designers– very high-level ones who make lots of dresses for people– and they all said no.

Um, excuse me? I’m not going to go off and declare that this is 100 percent, without-a-doubt, absolutely about body politics, since there’s a chance that other factors contributed to the designers’ decisions not to work with her, but this certainly smells fishy. What’s another legitimate reason for saying no to designing a dress for one of the biggest stars of the night? She was nominated for Supporting Actress in 2012, and everyone in the world was talking about her. Even if she were the most irritating diva in all of Hollywood, it would be a big mistake for a fashion house to pass on Melissa.

Still, it’s good to know that she isn’t afraid to speak up about stuff like this, and maybe this interview will inspire a big-name designer to make amends for their bullshit and dress her in something spectacular next year. We all know she deserves it.

Excuse my french but screw these so called “designers.” You aren’t very good at designing if you can’t do it for a variety of different bodies.
