Once Upon A Time star Jennifer Morrison is an underrated style winner, what with her pretty red carpet gowns and her cool, fresh style on days off. So, here’s something I never imagined I would say: I am totally in love with an illusion dress, and it is all because of Ms. Morrison. Behold:
For the 54th Monte Carlo TV Festival’s closing ceremony, Jennifer looked positively stunning in a mint green Georges Hobeika Spring 2014 gown with sheer paneling on the bodice. While I typically do not enjoy illusion fabric insertions between different parts of dresses, I absolutely love this one. The fit is spectacular, the design is beautiful, and for once, the paneling actually contributes to the appeal of her dress rather than looking like a sloppy addition.
I have never been a fan of these types of gowns, what with their nature of being frequently worn by Real Housewives (hi, Brandi Glanville) and similarly absurd red carpeters. While there are rare, rare exceptions–the most recent one I can recall is Zoe Saldana‘s in 2013–the fact of the matter is that most are patently absurd and make the wearer look like a human lava lamp. To be fair, that might be the style they are going for, but typically, I think it is safe to assume that that is not the desired overall look.
Speaking of overall look, Jennifer’s makeup and hair looked absolutely lovely:
She went with a sheer wash of pale green shadow that coordinated with her dress. Her skin was fresh and semi-matte, while her lips were finished off with a pretty raspberry gloss. And just check out those braids! You know how we feel about braids around here. (Or perhaps you don’t, in which case–just FYI, we really love them.) This was a total win on Jennifer’s part, and proof that even the most dislikable trends can actually be done well once in a while.
