10 Hairstyles Inspired By Planet Of The Apes That You’ll Want To Try (Yes, Really)

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)

Is anybody else excited for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes? Given all the fantastic reviews it has been getting from critics, I can’t wait to snag tickets and see the movie in all its sci-fi, action-filled glory. While 2011′s Rise of the Planet of the Apes was fun, Dawn sees a race of highly-intelligent primates ruling the world. And you know what that means, right? Planet of the Apes hairstyles.

I suppose you may not have guessed that that’s what it meant, but now you know! The history of this franchise has seen tons of cool hair, and we’re feeling pretty inspired by it. We’re not saying you need to sprout thick hair everywhere (though if you’re feeling a bit greasy due to that whole “being covered entirely by hair” thang, you can always pop on some dry shampoo all over yourself and get going), but you might as well try one of these fun styles out.

Some are from the original 1968 Planet of the Apes film, others are from the newer ones. Styles come from both the humans and the primates in these, so let’s get a little wild, shall we?

1. Planet of the Apes (1968)

If I were to interpret these snazzy locks into human hairstyles, it would almost certainly be a bob with v-shaped bangs.

Here’s how to get angular, modern fringe all on your own.

2. Linda Harrison in Planet of the Apes (1968)

Look how cute her hair was! Get this late ’60s siren’s teased, combed-back locks for a glamorous style that will stay in place all night.

This is similar to the look Kendall Jenner wore for the Met Gala, albeit slightly more teased with dirt than with hairspray. To get the look, apply a volumizing mousse to your roots (which are preferably a little on the dirty side), then tease with a comb at your crown. Brush the front of your hair back and spritz with a firm holding hairspray.

3. James Franciscus in Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970)

You may not have the facial hair to match him, but you can always style your short crop to look similarly!

Style your pixie cut with this easy tutorial to make it sit as well as James’ does in these bushes.

4. Cornelius in Escape From the Planet of the Apes (1971)

How badass does Cornelius look?

While I do not think we should all run out and grab striped suits, adding a striped headband to your beauty routine can give a little hint of Cornelius while channeling his 1970s style.

5. Zira in Escape From the Planet of the Apes (1971)

Remember the fake widow’s peak that Lupita Nyong’o did for the Critics’ Choice Awards? Channel Zira’s hairline with that!

Just make sure you go a more Lupita route and not, say, like Mad Men‘s Vincent Kartheiser (Pete Campbell).

6. Caesar in Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972)

I’m digging this bob with bangs, Caesar.

Here’s how to do a faux bob, so if you already have the bangs from #1, you’re good to go!

7. Aldo in Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973)

Aldo is one intimidating gorilla, which is exactly why you should steal inspiration from his wardrobe for your next night on the town. Yes, really. Your new style icon is a gorilla.

Check out this snazzy studded headband! Use it for this look:

Now don’t you look like a badass bent on world domination?

8. Daena in Planet of the Apes (2001)

Tim Burton‘s 2001 reboot left much to be desired, but at least Estella Warren‘s hair looked nice, right? Right.

Get her beachy, silky waves with this easy tutorial! Perfect for a day at the actual beach or simply trying to escape from primates. Either way.

9. Will Rodman in Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)

You know you want to do James Franco‘s “no really, I don’t shower” hair.

Here’s how to do it! Don’t shower. Look troubled. Giggle inappropriately.

10. Caesar in Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)

I loved Caesar’s character, even though he only says one word the entire time and most of the movie, I just feel so sorry for his sad digitally emotional self.

I wasn’t sure how to get the most Caesar-like hair, but honestly, I think just doing a slicked back look is the way to go. Whether you’re a lady or a guy, you can benefit from a cool slicked back style. And Caesar’s confidence, of course.
