Open Thread: What Do You Want Us To Try For Our Controversial Cult Favorite Column?

Recently, we have been trying out cult favorite beauty products that we have heard both great and terrible things about in order to see if they’re worth the money. It came about after we asked readers to tell us the biggest makeup, hair, and skincare disappointments they have encountered as well as the best beauty splurges, and noticed that some of the comments conflicted with one another, leading us to wonder which products were the real deal.

I wound up trying out and photographing the new Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Unknown Pleasures Collection of Lip Tars, which I personally loved but could see it is not for everyone given its very opaque appearance and slick texture. Then, I tried out Yves Saint Laurent‘s Touche Éclat Radiant Touch in the hopes that it would help brighten up my face, which has been looking dull and droopy due to moving blues. Sadly, I found it generally ineffective and not worth the $41 price tag.

So here’s the question: Where do we go from here? While I love trying out all sorts of beauty products and could swatch, rate, and review all day long (seriously, there are few things I love more than experimenting with beauty products), we would love to try specific products that you folks are concerned about. After all, we want to save you time, energy, and above all, money. Products can get seriously expensive, so it really sucks when you drop a bunch of cash on something that you wind up hating.

Here are a few examples of ones we are thinking of doing:

  • La Mer Creme de la Mer
  • Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer
  • Lush Gorgeous Moisturizer
  • NARS Orgasm Blush
  • Dior Diorshow Mascara
  • Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette

Got any other desired reviews? We would love to hear them, so tell us your suggestions in the comments!

I want to find a good highlight, so I’m biased in that direction! Benefit Hi-Beam? Or can you just recommend that on a personal level?

      • Alwyn

if you’re just looking for recommendations, hi-beam has treated me well and so has thebalm’s mary louminizer.

This is more fashion than beauty, but what about spanx??

omg yes do LA MER!!!!!!! I’ve almost-bought this 1000 times and I just really need to see a review from someone I trust before I dole out that cash! plz plz plz

Save your dough. I bought a jar of it some years ago to see what the fuss was about, and other than feeling incredibly fancy having the jar on my dresser, it was just meh. If you like, google it, and read some of the sciency reviews of the ingredients. There’s really nothing special about it, I promise.

        :)

Smashbox primer, although that’s one that I’d really like to see go head-to-head against a drugstore challenger.

      • Jenni

Do half your face in that and half your face in hemorrhoid cream and see what works better. PLEASE!

I’m interest in the La Mer cream and the Nars orgasm blush and also if the blush works with oale skin. Blushes usually tend to look too much on me.

The One Direction makeup line! Besides that, at home gel nail polishes, Chanel/Dior eyeshadow, lash growing mascaras…anything expensive.

There always seems to be a lot of controversy about Benefit’s ‘They’re Real’ so I think that would be a great one to do.

      • LimaJuliet

I love They’re Real Mascara. It is seriously the best mascara I have ever used, but it is difficult to get off. I’m not really a fan of They’re Real Push-up Gel Liner though.

How about some of the Armani foundations, with before and after photos? I read about them like they’re the HG of all HGs, but I’m skeptical…

    • Alwyn

I don’t know if they’ve been around long enough to warrant “cult” status, but I’d love to hear non-sponsored opinions about the glamglow masks. I tried the exfoliating one and it was nice but nothing worth $70, but that’s just me.

      • Samantha Escobar

Will do! I actually did a GlamGlow mask on Saturday and am doing it a few more times (so I can take photos over the course of 2 weeks) so I will post those as soon as it’s done, for sure. :) Glad there is interest!

I love Laura Mercier TM endlessly. Endlessly. I’ve tried everything.. this is THE BOMB. I shall continue buying Asian bb creams though, since the SPF cannot compete with those.
And Nars Orgasm blush please! The quality is terrible for what you get. People need to stop throwing their money away on blush.

I’d love to see a review of Tom Ford lipsticks. I have friends who rave about them, but I can’t quite wrap my head around the price. Also, that Younique (??) fiber mascara thing that’s taking over the internet.

Maybelline Great Lash. It is horrible, so gloppy and everyone raves about it.
