Lauren Napier is a celebrity makeup artist who has worked on countless movies, TV shows and magazine editorials. Her résumé reads like an IMDB page. She has worked with stars like Anne Hathaway, Zoe Kravitz and Tina Fey, and she has done makeup for television shows including Boardwalk Empire and Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. She has also worked on Saturday Night Live and helped transform the cast from one character to the next with literally a few minutes to do it. Read on to find out what it like working on the show and with A-list celebrities:
Q. Do your celebrity clients have specific ideas about their makeup? Do they occasionally let you have free reign?
A. My clients absolutely trust me to make bold and beautiful makeup choices for them. Of course, there is always the occasional “I want big lashes tonight” but a complete look is often a collaboration between the makeup artist, hair stylist and the wardrobe stylist to create a cohesive red carpet, event on-air look. I love the pageantry and effort of it all!
Q. You’ve worked with so many different celebrities. Is there one memorable look that stands out in your mind?
A. I worked on an independent film called Yelling To The Sky which starred Zoe Kravitz and Gabourey Sidibe, the girls get into an all out, knock-down, drag out, cat fight and both have bloody noses and scratches–that was fun and one of my most memorable makeup looks.
Q. Is it harder doing male or female clients’ makeup?
A. With women you get to play up the skin, apply copious amounts of color, texture and really build a look. With men the objective is measured, you must minimize the amount of product that he is wearing. I enjoy working with both women and men, I am equal opportunity!
Q. What is it like working on Saturday Night Live? Is there one makeup artist assigned to each actor/actress?
A. Saturday Night Live is the most fun I have ever had at work. Every cast member is assigned one makeup, hair and wardrobe person who all work together to make the best show that we can every Saturday night!
Q. How long do you have to change someone’s makeup from one character to another?
A. Saturday Night Live is different every week. Sometimes you’ve got a full six minute sketch to simply remove a red lip and sometimes you’ve got two minutes to transform a woman into a man wearing a mustache and beard.
Q. Do you have a favorite transformation? What one was most difficult?
A. My favorite transformation was what is called a “quick change” on set at Saturday Night Live. I was working with Kate McKinnon and the show required me to transform Kate from a heavily bronzed Kris Jenner to The Hunger Games’ ghost-faced Effie Trinket in two very short minutes (while she was also changing her wig and wardrobe). It’s a team effort and a mind-bending challenge, I loved all 120 seconds of it!
Q. Do you have a favorite film or magazine look that you’ve done?
A. I have had such an exciting career and love my experience in the industry. One of my favorite magazine looks was shot at Red Rock Canyon, just outside of Las Vegas. We arrived at the location by helicopter and spent the day doing makeup and hair on the edge of a cliff. When we wrapped, we were completely covered in a layer of red-copper dust, but we got the shots and they were spectacular.
