All The Foods To Keep In Your Kitchen To Up Your Beauty Game​​

We all know the saying “You are what you eat.” And since we all want to be Beyonce-esque dimes, it only makes sense that we should be eating things that are good for our health, skin and body in general.

The power of food is truly incredible. Whether you’re ingesting it or applying it onto your body in some way, shape or form, food can be the deciding factor on whether you feel up to getting off the couch and turning off Netflix or if you’ll watch just o​ne more episode (which obviously turns into six more episodes). Food can also be the judge when it comes to how your skin looks and feels.

Like I said, we’re going for the Beyonce-esque body, skin and hair and one way to get closer to that ideal is to put down the Ben & Jerry’s—no, seriously put it down—and pick up some fruits and veggies.

I got the inside scoop from the c​reator of the natural, organic cold-pressed juice company, S​uja Juice, ​Annie Lawless, (since she’s almost too familiar with living a healthy lifestyle) to see just how much of a difference simple fruits and vegetables can make in your life when eaten, or made into simple, DIY skincare products.

Cucumbers

These little green beauties are rich in hydrating electrolytes and silica, which if you don’t speak science, means they will promote the formulation of collagen and help you say sayonara to fine lines and wrinkles. They can obviously be eaten on their own, but if you’re bored eating them solo, trying sprinkling some dill, thyme or chili powder on top for some extra oomph.

Also, if your under eye bags are bigger than your airplane luggage, and you need them gone in a pinch, slice up some cukes and relax with them on your eyes for 10-15 minutes (or longer if you have the time). This isn’t just a Sex And The City thing, it really work!

Watermelon

Just like cucumbers, watermelon also has collagen forming properties. Yes, they’re made up of about 92% water, but these gigantic, sweet fruits provide some serious vitamins like A, B6 and C, along with tons of antioxidants, amino acids and potassium.

The juicy fruit has been popularly used as a natural toner when applied by itself or even blended with some honey. For those gals with more oily skin, adding hazelnut powder to your watermelon juice will keep you nice and hydrated so your skin doesn’t feel the need to produce so much oil.

It’s also said to be a great natural cure for acne. Just by dipping a cotton ball into 100% watermelon juice after cleansing and letting it sit for about 15 minutes, then rinsing, you can watch your acne slowly disappear.

Turmeric

You’ll love having this plant around especially in the summer or if you live somewhere that it’s warm all year round. Turmeric can instantly calm sunburns and heat rash, so it’s a great way to calm your skin after you’ve been roasting at the beach all day.

Strawberries

The health benefits for your skin and body that strawberries have are seriously endless. First off, they’re a great source of natural salicylic acids (great for those pesky little pimples) and also are loaded to the brim with antioxidants and vitamins that can help repair any skin damage or inflammation.

Yes, you can get some of those benefits just by eating strawberries, but also making them into tasty little skincare concoctions is a thrifty option. Mash up some of these red beauties in a bowl and go ahead and rub your mixture all over your face in circular motions. We’d recommend letting it sit on your skin’s surface for about 3-4 minutes so that it can do all it’s magical work a.k.a. absorb excess oil and calm inflammation.

Leafy Greens, Sweet Potatoes, Broccoli

These three vegetables will do wonders to keep your skin bright since they’re rich in vitamins A and C. On top of that, they’re packed with antioxidants and free radicals that will help combat annoying environmental damage.

Leafy greens also contain folate, which is a nutrient that aids in DNA repair. You’ll also be getting lutein when you eat leafy greens and this will balance the lipids in your skin which in turn means increased hydration and elasticity.

Avocados

You’ve definitely heard this one before. How many times have you seen avocado face mask recipes on Pinterest? Well, there’s a reason for that. Avocados not only taste great, but are a wonderful source of healthy monounsaturated fats, which help to keep your skin smooth, supple and moisturized.

Coconut Oil

Okay, so maybe this isn’t exactly a fruit or vegetable, but coconut oil is something you should absolutely have on hand at all times. Because it’s so moisturizing, you can use it in your hair or on your skin to keep your parts hydrated at all times.

Bonus: If your hair is chemically treated, dyed or bleached, you’ll love this. Coat your hair in coconut oil before you head out in the pool or to the beach. Because oil repels water, the coconut oil will stand guard and save your locks from becoming a prisoner to chemicals and salts that may damage your hair (especially if you have porous hair shafts from bleaching).

It only makes sense to stock up your kitchen with these fruits and veggies that you can literally get at any grocery store. Rather than spending hundreds on fancy-schmancy name brand “magical” potions, head to your local bodega and instantly up your beauty game and soon you’ll be hair flipping all over the place.
