The Best Oscars After-Party Looks Put the Awards Show’s Glamorous Red Carpet to Shame

For all of its glamorous looks, I feel like we can all agree on one thing: the Oscars red carpet was relatively underwhelming this year. Aside from the obvious standouts (here’s looking at you, Alicia Vikander and Saoirse Ronan), people played it relatively safe, and while safe can still be pretty, it doesn’t make our job as fashion editors very exciting.

It seems, though, that the celebrities weren’t forgoing excitement altogether. Rather, they were simply biding their time until the official Vanity Fair Oscars After-Party started, because that’s where all the best looks came out to play. From ’70s-chic to modern day edge, the best-dressed stars of the night put the ceremony’s red carpet to shame, and then some.

Read on for the best-dressed stars at the Oscars after-party!

1. Alicia Vikander

You can just tell that Alicia Vikander’s stylist knew that she was going to win that night. This, along with the custom yellow Louis Vuitton gown she wore earlier in the night, were made to be photographed and talked about, and the black sequins of the gown let her shiny new Oscar do all the talking.

2. Diane Kruger

Bless the fashion gods for bringing Diane Kruger unto us all. I always miss her at a red carpet, so I was admittedly disappointed when I didn’t see her before the Oscars started. She made up for that initial sadness when she rolled on out in this straight-off-the-runway Reem Acra gown. The pulled-back hair and simple makeup and jewelry were the only way to go with such a stunningly ornate dress.

3. Elizabeth Banks

Elizabeth Banks has been on one serious roll lately. I’m still trying to get over how much I loved the floral gown she wore to the Star Wars: The Force Awakens premiere, and now I’ll have to add this jumpsuit (yes, it’s a jumpsuit!) to that list of unforgettable outfits.

4. Sofia Vergara

You guys, I am SO MAD at Sofia Vergara for not wearing this to the Oscars instead of that navy Marchesa monstrosity. She looks so chic and elegant here, and it makes the fact that I still hate her hair and makeup that much more tolerable.

5. Kate Beckinsale

There certainly was a lot of white going on at this after-party [insert bad #OscarsSoWhite joke here], but I love how the relatively simple navy beading at the top adds a ton of visual interest without distracting from the dress’s perfect construction, separating it from the pack of similarly-hued numbers.

6. Selena Gomez

Normally I think silver dresses like Selena Gomez’s are too disco ball-ish for my taste, but there’s something about this one that feels different. Maybe it’s the big silver grommets down the middle, or the fact that Selena Gomez has just been pure fire lately.

7. Jessica Alba

This is full-on ’70s glamour if ever I’ve seen it on the red carpet, and kudos to Jessica Alba for pulling this off without looking too kitschy. I think it’s the bronze smokey eye and vintage-looking hair that clinches it, though I wouldn’t say no to a pair of gold heels like those in my wardrobe.

8. Gillian Jacobs

Gillian Jacobs looks so beautiful here that I actually had to do a double take. Printed gowns like these can come across as upholstery-like if not styled and tailored correctly, but this one manages to avoid that. The pop of red on her manicure adds a fun, youthful touch, especially considering how mature the slicked-back hair makes her look.

9. Maria Menounos

Sure, maybe Maria Menounos didn’t change between the ceremony and the after-party, but when you’re wearing custom Christian Siriano, you’re bound to be among the best-dressed wherever you are. Also, I’d like to wear this at my wedding. Someone make that happen.

10. Jennifer Lawrence

If you almost forgot about Jennifer Lawrence last night, you’re not alone. I had assumed she didn’t show up to the show until I saw her in the audience halfway through the broadcast looking stunning in her lace Dior gown. This crop top and skirt combo is edgy and almost unlike J.Law, but I love it all the same. It kind of reminds me of the dress she wore to the Mockingjay UK premiere, but only in terms of its unexpected edginess.

11. Brie Larson

And, of course, one of the night’s brightest stars had to go through a complete outfit change. Personally, I think she just thought, “Hey, I won my Oscar, and I can go out in my Barbie dream bathrobe if I want to.” In all seriousness though, sans the matching heels, I love the way this velvet gown is draped, and the ease of her hair and makeup goes with it perfectly.
