Are We Supposed To Be Shocked That Women Look In The Mirror 8 Times A Day?

Are We Supposed To Be Shocked That Women Look In The Mirror 8 Times A Day?

Women check their appearance in the mirror an average of eight times a day, according to a new survey that is apparently meant to be shocking. And it’s not just traditional mirrors: We use other people’s glasses, shop windows, the side mirrors on cars, and smart-phone screens to get the job done. Our confidence varies by mirror, too: 5% of women said they look their worst in the bathroom at work. Is all this mirror-glancing a sign of runaway vanity, or just confirmation that appearance matters, especially during the workday? More »

10 Key Moments In The History Of Sex In The Office

10 Key Moments In The History Of Sex In The Office

The new book Sex in the Office traces changing views of white-collar women through history, starting decades before working women were commonplace, and before the term “sexual harassment” had even been coined. As author Julie Berebitsky point out, sexuality in the office has almost always been viewed as a threat, but the nature of that threat has changed through the decades. The New York Post compiled a timeline of major moments in the history of sex in the office, based on the book. Here are 10 of them, from the movie theater to the courtroom, drawn from the Post’s time line and augmented with a few more recent examples of our own. More »

The Sex Lives Of Working Women Have Nothing To Do With Their Career Success

The Sex Lives Of Working Women Have Nothing To Do With Their Career Success

In Newsweek‘s current cover story, Katie Roiphe has noticed a dangerous trend in working women. Mainly, she thinks that all of our success and confidence is making us yearn for a simpler time when men were in charge. Roiphe contends that spanking and submissive fantasies in women are pervasive and widespread, based mostly on the popularity of HBO’s new series Girls and the novel 50 Shades of Grey.

The problem is that sexual fantasies and preferences have absolutely no bearing on how a person wants to be perceived in the world around them. Presenting the two side-by-side and acting as if they correlate is a dangerous bit of misinformation to sell, especially if you’re only doing it to create controversy and increase web traffic. ‘Planning My Wedding Almost Cost Me My Job’

âPlanning My Wedding Almost Cost Me My Jobâ

>”I used to think a wedding was a simple affair. Boy and girl meet, they fall in love, he buys a ring, she buys a dress, they say I do. I was wrong. That’s getting married. A wedding is an entirely different proposition.” -Father of The Bride
As we know from movies, television, magazines, the entire section at the book store devoted to it and probably some of our closest friends and family (and maybe ourselves), a wedding can be a huge ordeal. It seems every year the wedding industry gets bigger (as of 2010 the total wedding market was expected to be worth $42.73 billion) and people want more and more elaborate weddings. Planning them seems to take on a life of their own and for some it can start to interfere and possibly cost them their real job. More »

Blow Your Coworkers Away With A Recharged Spring Look

Blow Your Coworkers Away With A Recharged Spring Look

As fashionable as it is to be a vampire right now, your face could use a refresher.

This is why you should sign up for monthly beauty sample deliveries from Birchbox. Getting a package in the mail is pretty much one of the only exciting things that can happen to normal working people on a weekday. But it is especially nice if you get a surprise box of treats that will help you embrace spring More »

10 Ways To Feel More Succesful At Work

“I didn’t see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.”- Steve Jobs

Last week our sister site The Gloss featured an article titled, “I’m Still Waiting To Feel Successful.” The author wrote:

“As a lily pad that needs a life jacket in a murky sort of liquid-something that can’t be described, I spend a lot of time analyzing my successes in life, or rather, lack there of.

Topless Protesters At Davos Fight The Power With Two Weapons Each

Would you be willing to take your top off in freezing cold weather for justice? Topless members of the Ukrainian protest group FEMEN showed up at Davos this week to protest the oppression of the poor. Their slogan: “Our God is woman, our mission is protest, our weapons are bare breasts.”

This Woman Just Got Fired Through Facebook

This Woman Just Got Fired Through Facebook

Carol Bartz got fired over the phone a few months back but getting fired through Facebook is actually worse. I mean, it’s Facebook. It is one thing to be fired for your comments that you make on it, but to actually get the message through this particular social medium is really upsetting. Even LinkedIn would be better. A woman named Angel Clark, a talk radio host, was fired by the station WGMD on her Facebook account. The basic gist just thanked her for her time with the station and that they were moving in a different direction. More »
