I have nothing bad to say about dark red lipstick pretty much 365 days of the year. In fact, I’m crazy about dark lips in general, the darker the better. But I can understand why most people choose to bring out their vampiest looks towards the end of fall, because theoretically some people believe in “seasonal fashion” and “not looking like a witch.” Oh well.
If you’re hoping to try out a darker lip these days, you’re probably being bombarded by options and pushy make up salespeople. We saved you some time and rounded up 10 fantastic options that either we wear or our friends wear.
Let’s get things started with Sephora Collection Rouge Cream Lipstick in Courtisane, $12
I wear this lipstick at least three days a week. It’s definitely a dark red, but a little softer than your typical super dark lip. I think of it as training wheels—a way to ease your face into full on wine-colored.
CoverGirl Lip Perfection Lipstick in Euphoria, $6.15
I was wary of drugstore lipstick at first, because when lipstick goes bad, it really goes bad. But Covergirl turned out to be a welcome surprise—I have this shade, which is less purple on, and a coral color at home.
Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Black Cherry, $4.99
The price unbelievable, and my friends swear by this highly pigmented, matte lipstick.
Illamasqua Lipstick in Growl, $24
Nars Lipstick In Scarlet Empress, $26
They are not screwing around when they say their semi-matte finish looks velvety soft—when my friend Molly showed up to dinner wearing this I almost kissed her full on the mouth, just to feel the texture. With my mouth.
Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar in Vintage, $18
My colleague Joanna says that wearing this makes her feel like “a sex animal,” which is all the endorsement that I need.
NARS Pure Matte Lipstick in Volga, $26
This color is perfect on every skin tone, ever. End of story.
Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey, $15
I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love Black Honey. It’s super versatile—you can put it on in layers and decide how dramatic you want your lip to be. Every cool babysitter I had in the 90s wore this, and sometimes let me try it on.
Make Up Forever Rouge Artist Intense in Black Currant, $20
MAC Lipstick in Cyber, $15
This rich, deep purple is favorite of my colleague Ashley, who knows everything ever about style.
