New York Fashion Week is underway and there have been many exciting things to discuss. If we just focus on beauty, we had a surprise collaboration between e.l.f. Cosmetics and Christian Siriano and now Alexander Wang has made one of the forgotten hair accessories of the 80s and 90s trendy again: the claw clip.
The throwback accessory was first spotted backstage at the show. Hairstylist Guido Palau was in charge of the updo while Diane Kendal was in charge of makeup. In Diane’s behind-the-scenes photos, we see models’ hair slicked back and held in place with a claw clip — or banana clip as they are sometimes fondly called.
The key difference between the claw clips at the Alexander Wang Fall 2018 show and the ones that you might have kicking around in your bathroom cupboard are that Alexander Wang’s were embossed with the designer’s logo to play into the logomania trend. The designer banana clips are likely to be one of the must-have accessories of the Fall 2018 season (provided they decide to put them into production), but you can still replicate the look at home using your old clips or new ones purchased at the drugstore.
The key to making the look work now is to not make it too perfect. Follow the lead of Alexander Wang’s cool girls. Guido explained to Harper’s Bazaar, “The hair is a take on a power executive of the 80s. It’s corporate and kind of smart in a way.” So, take a cue from the runway and use a liberal amount of gel of styling pomade to scoop locks back and fasten with a claw clip. To complete the lo-fi look, keep makeup natural.
