If you have ever owned a purse at some point in your entire life, you know that they get pretty crowded pretty quickly. You start with a promise that it’ll be the first bag you ever keep neat, then slowly it descends into a trashed hotel room of receipts, broken lip balms and unwrapped gum. But NOT THIS TIME, folks! This autumn, whether you’re actually going back to school or just trying to simplify your busy bag, these are the beauty essentials you should be popping in your purse (besides your wallet, keys, and BAMF Club membership card).
Oh, and as a side note: am I the only full-grown adult who still feels like she’s “going back to school” every September even though I haven’t been in school in years? I can’t be. Please tell me I am not.
Having the perfect mascara to apply right before you get off work or out of class will make your eyes look bigger and make you feel like a million bucks. Try a colored one for an added dose of vibrancy to your face!
2. Signature Scent.
The importance of a signature fragrance cannot be overemphasized–this is your calling card, the scent that fills the air when you walk into a room. Try a new one this year, whether it’s from our stack of reader recommendations or just one you spotted at a cool boutique.
Eyeliner adds a dose of definition to your lids while also saying a lot about your personality. Pick a liquid liner for a sharp, crisp effect; go for a gel liner to get a dramatic and sexy look; use a bold stick eyeliner to brighten up your whole face.
Trusted Classic: Cynthia Rowley Beauty Liquid Eyeliner ($18); Hourglass 1.5 MM Mechanical Gel Eye Liner ($45 for pack of 3)
Fresh & Fun: Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Cosmetic Colour Pencil ($16); Ardency Inn Modster Smooth Ride Supercharged Eyeliner ($19)
If you’re a big lipstick fan, having one in your purse at all times is essential. In the event you love bright lipsticks as much as I do, give our “Fresh & Fun” pick a try! It’s one of the OCC shades I swatched for our Controversial Cult Favorite column a couple weeks ago, and it is truly a head-turner. You’ve got to try blue lipstick at least once–you’ll almost certainly love it, I promise!
5. Lip Balm.
Picking an eyeshadow that will last a long time is important when you’re running around throughout the day and night. Pick a cream formula for fall to ensure your lids will look great all day long. Wear a neutral matte color for a subtle effect; choose a shimmery one for a look that is ultra-glam.
Trusted Classic: It Cosmetics Naturally Pretty Matte Luxe Transforming Eyeshadow Palette ($42)
Fresh & Fun: Jouer Long-Wear Creme Mousse Eyeshadow ($30)
shame myself brag too much, but I’m a fairly sweaty lady. I can’t help it, I’ve come to terms with it. Therefore, I always (always) have deodorant on me just in case I am feeling less than fresh. If you don’t love the deodorants you’ve used in the past, perhaps try a men’s deodorant instead; in my opinion, theirs seems to mask odors better while women’s deodorants often just make them smell more floral.
9. Feminine Protection.
Having a great blush can brighten up your look considerably. I personally prefer cream or gel formulas for long days, as they last from morning to night and offer a smooth, natural finish.
11. Blotting Sheets.
These may not seem like a beauty item (and yes, technically they’re not), but I know I’m not the only lady out there whose confidence shoots up while listening to an upbeat song. (Lately, I’ve been listening to Bondax “Giving It All” and revisiting Soulwax’s Nite Versions nonstop.) Keeping a solid pair of these in your bag is the perfect way to keep your inner party going at all times.
BONUS: Makeup Organizers
Sure, you can let your lipstick, powder, and eye makeup have free reign over the inside of your purse, but do you really want to end up with a ton of eyeshadow exploding all over your wallet? (Explaining to a bouncer why his hands are covered in glitter after checking your ID will not be fun, I promise.) Instead, snag one of these cute cosmetics organizers instead!
