If someone asked me to describe the epitome of a chic woman, I’d have a hard time nailing down her physical characteristics. The only thing I’d know for certain is her scent. She’d smell like sandalwood; all chic women do.

If you’re a chic woman yourself (or you like pretending to be one), then you’ll definitely want to invest in a sandalwood perfume or two. The following are seven of my favorites. Let me know what you think of my picks, and leave me the names of your own in the comment section below.

Diptyque Tam Dao, $90 for 1.7 oz

Speaking of chic, the Parisian perfumery Diptyque is practically synonymous with the word. Tam Dao is one of those “holy grail” kind of perfumes—it’s on every sandalwood lover’s must-have list. It’s woody, warm, a touch spicy and powdery; it’s sandalwood at its finest. Tam Dao features notes of sandalwood, cedar, rosewood, amber, and musk.

Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black, $80 for 1.7 oz

I’m sure it will come as no surprise to you that Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are behind one of the chicest sandalwood scents on the market today. Nirvana Black is sultry, sexy, and elegant. The sillage is top-notch here, too. If you’re a fan of powdery, woody scents, you need to check this one out. The notes in Nirvana Black are of violet, sandalwood, and vanilla.

Demeter Fragrance Library Sandalwood, $20 for 1 oz

This perfume was made for the sandalwood purist. This is a lovely, linear, straight-to-the-point scent that works beautifully on its own or blended with other fragrances. Sandalwood is also available as a shower gel, body oil, and atmosphere spray (click here for prices).

Serge Lutens Santal Majuscule, $150 for 1.7 oz

It’s no secret around these parts that I absolutely adore Serge Lutens fragrances. Santal Majuscule is no exception. This perfume does it all: it’s rich, creamy, woody, and floral, and a spritz or two will last you for hours. The notes in Santal Majuscule are of sandalwood, cacao, and Damascus rose.

Nest White Sandalwood, $68 for 1.7 oz

I discovered Nest fragrances a few months ago, and I’ve been in love ever since. White Sandalwood is one of their more elegant offerings—it’s very warm, woody, and spicy. The notes in this fragrance are of white sandalwood, almond, spices, and musk.

TokyoMilk Honey & the Moon No. 10, $30 for 1 oz

“Honey & the Moon” has to be one of the prettiest perfume names I’ve ever heard of. The scent itself is just as lovely—it’s a beautiful and warm gourmand with a touch of floral on the finish. Honey fans, you’ll adore this one. Honey & the Moon features notes of honey, violet, jasmine, and sandalwood.

Le Labo Santal 33, $175 for 1.7 oz

Santal 33 is so popular among New Yorkers that the New York Times actually published an article about it. Needless to say, if you’re looking for a fragrance that will set you apart from the masses, this probably isn’t it. But if you’re cool with blending in (or you live outside of the five boroughs), you need to try this perfume. Santal 33 smells like wood warmed by the sun, leather, and something crisp and floral on the finish. It’s lovely, to say the least. The notes in this perfume are of sandalwood, cedar, cardamom, violet, papyrus, leather, amber, and iris.
