Beyonce is almost invariably the most glamorous woman in the room. She turns the pageantry dial up to 11. But at last night’s Grammys–an event where even the newbies show up with purple lipstick and live birds in their hair–Beyonce set herself apart by showing up in a look so bare, natural, and understated that it looks like she genuinely woke up like this. (#flawless)
Now I did not just fall off the turnip truck (and I am not a dude who says he likes women better “without makeup”), so I do not for a moment think this is actually what Beyonce looks like without makeup. In fact I would hazard a guess that this “no makeup” look takes a much more skilled makeup artist and a lot longer to perfect than simply throwing on a swipe of red lipstick and an Instagram eyebrow. But in a sea of that kind of makeup, this “no makeup” look is refreshing. It’s bold and it’s directional, not to mention that it really plays up Beyonce’s biggest beauty strength, which is being Beyonce and being beautiful and having not aged since 1996.
The “non makeup” look is perfectly complemented by what admittedly looks like the New York Times‘ big trend of the year: “Non Hair.” But this “I am not wearing any makeup” look was mimiced last night by both Rihanna and Miley Cyrus, and that’s a pretty rousing endorsement of that “natural” look, which means in a few months we’ll all be working ourselves into a lather just trying to look like we rolled out of bed like that. It’s tough, but with a few tricks it can be done.
