I wonder what Van Gogh would think of this–other than who the hell is Beyoncé? Photographer Dan Bannino has decided to adapt the classic 17th century still life for modern times. How do you take one of art’s most popular subjects, that was interpreted by Caravaggio, Gaugin and Monet, (I will stop with the art history lesson now) for modern times? You add a celebrity into the mix–and instead of spending four hours painting an apple, you photograph the whole thing–that is how. And this isn’t an Instagram #foodporn picture either. The results are so good it almost makes me what to give up eating solid foods for good–but not quite. (I like my chocolate in bar form, thank you.)

The Italy-based artist explains the idea behind the appetizing project:

“With this series my aim was to capture the beauty that lies in this terrible constriction of diets and deprivation, giving them the importance of an old master’s painting. I wanted to make them significant, like classic works of arts that are becoming more and more weighty as they grow older. My aim was to show how this weirdness hasn’t changed even since the 15th century.”

Oh, there are so many things to say, I don’t know where to begin. All I will say is that Dan Bannino is marvelous.

Here is Beyoncé’s Master Cleanse masterpiece:

I see lemons, peppers, salt and water–and let’s not forget the most important thing, (pink!) toilet paper. (You can come to your own conclusions on that one.) I love that he decided to add a gold chain and earrings to make it extra fabulous. I bet Bey would approve.

No word on whether he will create another artwork for the vegan phase Beyoncé and Jay Z went through.

Beyoncé’s diet isn’t the only one to get the artistic touch. Bannino has also turned Kate Moss‘s Hollywood Diet and Gwyneth Paltrow‘s Strict Detox Diet into hilariously accurate artworks. Teaser: one doesn’t involve any food, while the other one will make you wish it didn’t have any food in it. Any guesses on whose is whose?
