Have you heard of Bio-Oil?  I am interested in products that have a unique history.  I just received a sample with facts and background information about this multi-purpose skincare product that has been available since 1987, but only in the U.S. since 2007.  Bio-Oil was created by German cosmetic scientist Dieter Beier in South Africa as a hybrid product that combined functions of a nutrient-rich oil and a highly absorbent cream.

Bio-Oil is an affordable product that is available at your local drugstore.  It comes in a small cylindrical bottle and has the consistency and smell of a generic perfume.  The ingredients of Bio-Oil include Vitamin A, Vitamin E, calendula, lavender, rosemary oil, and a special trademarked ingredient called PurCellin Oil.  PurCellin Oil is the the result of many years of research by Beier and is what distinguishes Bio-Oil from other oil-based skin products.  It is a recreation of an oil secreted by ducks during preening that creates a thin non-greasy water repellent layer over the top of the duck’s feathers.  The oil has a less greasy feel than most oils, which made it ideal for use as an absorbent skin cream.

Bio-Oil borrows the technology from the ducks and applies it to human skin to offer a product that is used to prevent and minimize scars and stretch marks, even skin tone, nourish aging skin, and lubricate dry skin.  It takes months for Bio-Oil to have an effect on scars and stretch marks, so I can’t attest to any results in that area.  The product still has a texture that is too greasy for me to use on my face (unless I wanted to be super shiny all day) but I would recommend it for treating dry areas of the body.  Besides the special ingredient PurCellin Oil, I do think that the Vitamin E and lavender oils are effective ingredients to use to restore and moisturize skin.  Your skin secretes natural oils as moisturizers, so it’s a natural step to use a researched skin care oil when your skin is dehydrated and flaky.
