A few weeks ago, Rihanna made a stir on the style blogs when she revealed her newest hairdo: old lady gray. The singer was following in the (at this point innumerable) ranks of actresses, models and It-lebrities who’ve gone gray long before retirement: Tavi, Pink, Mary-Kate Olsen, Kelly Osbourne, Kate Moss, Lady Gaga, Nicole Richie, Pixie Geldoff and every personal style blogger ever on Tumblr.
But Rihanna’s stir didn’t last long at all–within days, she debuted an even newer look, this time a cute ’90s crop. And with that, her gray period was over.
We couldn’t help but wonder–because we are the sort required to follow celebrity hairstyles as if their are extremely important things–if Rihanna had jumped ship because the trend already felt so stale. Even Kelly Osbourne–who’s had lavender hair so long it’s practically synonymous with her, has been gradually darkening her hue to a solid purple.
And then we saw Chloe Norgaard on the Nicole Miller runway–her hair a bright green:
The 22-year-old New York-based It Model first shook up the runways at Rodarte‘s Fall 2013 show–then with technicolor hair–which, in turn, inspired a Vogue feature on her look. But something about her sudden focus on one hue has us wondering if the next trend in at-home hair is a little less granny and a little more Kermit. …Only, you know, Fashion.
And, since the ’90s are having a moment, it’s about time Manic Panic returns right along with them.
