Sunscreen is something that we should be wearing all year long, but it’s especially important that we wear it in the summer because that it when we’re outside more and it’s also when the sun’s rays are at their strongest. You might have already learned this the hard way with a Memorial Day sunburn.

To prevent feature burns, it’s important to be aware of the proper way to apply sunscreen as well as the mistakes that often result in lobster red sunburns.

These are the common sunscreen mistakes that you are probably making:

1. Not applying enough.

Sorry, but that little bottle isn’t supposed to last you all summer. You need to be applying a decent amount of sunscreen to ensure that you are fully protected. A lot of people suggest applying a shot glass worth of sunscreen to cover your entire body.

2. Failing to reapply sunscreen.

If you apply sunscreen in the morning, that is a brilliant start, but it isn’t enough. The key is to be vigilant about reapplying it. Yes, it can be a bit of a hassle, but if you don’t reapply it, you could end up with a nasty burn. Aim to apply sunscreen every couple of hours or right after you’ve gone swimming or done any sweaty activities.

3. Using old formulas.

If you have dug out a bottle of sunscreen from last year and you’re using it, it’s a wise idea to stop. Chances are the product has already expired. And even if the date is still good on it, a lot of derms recommend throwing out the bottles anyways because once they are opened, they lose their effectiveness.

4. Forgetting key areas.

Sunscreen should be applied everywhere but it is easily to miss some areas. Any spot of your body can burn so make sure you cover often-overlooked areas like your feet, neck, shoulders, bum, ears and hands.

5. Ignoring your hair.

Your hair may not get an inflamed sunburn like your face and back but the sun’s rays can still damage your locks. When you’re going to be outside, it is wise to wear a hat with a wide brim. You can also protect your locks with a UV spray or an aerosol sunscreen. To make it easy to add sunscreen into your hair regimen, look for hair products that offer SPF protection.

6. Assuming SPF makeup is a decent substitute for sunscreen.

Makeup with SPF is brilliant but it doesn’t allow you to skip sunscreen. The reason? You never apply enough of the makeup to make it equal the sunscreen protection you should be getting. You can still use that SPF foundation or powder, but make sure you’re using your usual sunscreen.

7. Not allowing enough time for the sunscreen to absorb.

Do you slap on sunscreen then immediately go outside? Or do you apply sunscreen when you’re already lounging in a deck chair? It’s actually best if you apply sunscreen awhile before you go out so it has a chance to absorb. Try to apply your SPF about 15 minutes before you leave the house.

8. Applying the product while you’re wearing clothes.

It’s best to apply sunscreen when you’re in the buff so you don’t have to worry about necklines and straps. When we apply sunscreen when we’re clothed, we often think clothes protect us. However, when our clothes shift, we get burned. Therefore, applying sunscreen while you’re naked will help ensure all parts of your body are protected.
