Just a day after revealing her new dreadlocks to Instagram, Demi Lovato is looking colorful, vaguely ’90s, and super gorgeous on the latest cover of Seventeen. The magazine has also put out a promotional photo (which you can see here), in which she’s wearing a pink motorcycle jacket, a denim shirt, approximately ten thousand accessories, red lips, and a whole rainbow of hair colors. It’d be a little over the top for a real-world event, but for a teen mag? Awesome. She’s like the love child of Lizzie McGuire and a My Little Pony.
And, as we’ve come to expect from Demi, she’s using her spotlight to spread a positive message about self-love— and to open up about her recovery from addiction and mental illness. She tells Seventeen,
Since I went to treatment, there have been days when it’s felt really easy, and I’ve felt great about where I am. But then I have moments when it’s not. That’s life. You can’t just take your mind and your body into the shop and get it fixed. It doesn’t come out repaired. It’s not like a car. It takes time—pace yourself. Every day is a new opportunity to change your life and be who you want to be.
Hell yeah. She goes on to share an adorable idea for curbing your negative self image, recommending that people put money in a jar for every mean thought they have about themselves, with the idea of donating the change to charity. I’m not sure I have the patience to put that idea into action, but it’s pretty cute. I’m always so glad that young girls have Demi– and her wild, bright, crazy hair– to look up to. (Maybe Demi’s vibrant hair will be the final push you need to try out a new color for summer?)
