Let’s just start this out with a big disclaimer: I am terrible at doing my nails. I am impatient and I feel like I look terrible with nail polish, and I’m that Tumblr photo where the left hand is perfect and the right hand looks like I was doing my nails in an earthquake.
But as terrible as I am at doing my nails, I also don’t ever get manicures. I really just don’t enjoy them and I’d much rather spend that money on dinner and a box of wine. So, even though there are much easier ways of getting my nails to look good, I’ve found that Scotch tape can be my best friend. I can actually have #nailinspo nail art AND get myself a decent amount of Instagram likes, without worrying about becoming a Pinterest fail.
The best way to do it is to use your actual nails as part of the design. Negative space is your best friend when it comes to maximizing laziness and not worrying about looking cray cray. All you’ll need is some Scotch tape (Painters tape also works really well) and your favorite polish. No need to spend money on fancy-schmancy nail art pens or special nail tape.
So here are a few minimalist nail art ideas that even the worst nail artist (ahem, me) can handle.
I actually did this! Those are my nails!
How to: Place a stripe of tape right down the middle of your nail, let it sit for a few seconds and then paint above and below. After the polish has dried a bit, remove the tape and then apply the top coat.
Slanted French Tip

French tips are a classic negative space mani but by slanting it a bit, like this style from NYFW 2014, it makes it a bit more modern and a bit less Sweet 16.
How to: Take a piece of tape and place it across your entire nail at the desired angle. Paint the tip of your nail and remove tape when the polish is dry. Cover with top coat.

I also did this one, but with a thicker triangle. I kind of like the skinnier version better.
How to: Take two pieces of tape and create the triangle across your nail bed. Cover the triangle that’s created with polish. Wait for the polish to dry completely before removing the tape and covering in a top coat.
Diagonal Stripe Mani
Told you I love these kind of manis. This literally took me five minutes.
How to: Place tape across your entire nail at your desired angle and paint the side you’d like with the color you’d like.
Inverse Triangle Mani
This is similar to the triangle one above, but just switch around the tape placement.
How to: Take two pieces of tape and create the triangle across the top of your nail. Cover the triangle that’s created with polish. Wait for the polish to dry completely before removing the tape and covering in a top coat.
