After a couple months of speculation, Kate Moss has finally been confirmed for the January/February cover of Playboy–which just so happens to be the 60th anniversary issue.
Why this is a big deal, we’re not entirely sure–Moss has done more nude shoots than just about any model of her profile we can think of and, moreover, plenty of other fashion models have gotten naked for Hugh Hefner‘s equally beloved and reviled lad mag. Let’s take a look!
Ed. Note: The list is obviously not safe for work, because it includes covers of foreign editions of the magazine, which have a devil-may-care attitude about visible breasts. Also, the final entry is disturbing (but censored).
We should probably start with Cindy.
The great Herb Ritts shot the great Cindy Crawford–the biggest model in the world at the time–for the July 1988 issue.
Claudia Schiffer had the May 1997 cover duties.
Proving her versatility yet again, Bianca Balti transitioned from high fashion catwalks to the pages of French Playboy.
In 2011, Daisy Lowe had the cover.
Joan Severance may not be much of a household name now–but she was a hugely successful model in the 70s and 80s (the scout who discovered Linda Evangelista told her she resembled Severance). Here’s Severance on the January 1990 issue.
Kylie Bax is one of the few women in the world with Vogue and Playboy covers under her belt.
Angie Everhart has multiple Playboy covers–and Elle and Glamour covers, too.
Okay, so maybe Adrianne Curry doesn’t quite count–but she did win America’s Next Top Model.
Anouck Lepere sure counts, though–the model dominated catwalks in the ’00s and posed for French Playboy several times.
Ten more ahead, including some bonafide supermodels…
No list of models in Playboy would be complete without mention of Elle Macpherson‘s famous cover.
Oh, Eva Herzigova–you’re a gorgeous woman and a great model, you deserved a better cover line.
Lily Cole was one of the biggest fashion models of the ’00s too–here she is starring in a ’60s themed (and Lolita, ugh) issue of French Playboy.
Lydia Hearst. French Playboy, again.
Naomi Campbell‘s done the cover several times.
While Carol Alt posed in 2008.
Grace Jones, killing it (per usual) in German Playboy‘s July 1985 issue.
Stephanie Seymour–supermodel, Playboy cover girl, doomed robot bride.
Nastassja Kinski has had the cover twice.
And, last of all, worst of all:
Brooke Shields, at the remarkably disturbing age of 10. She’d posed for photographer Garry Gross and the images–which were intended to celebrate little girls on the cusp of womanhood–were made for Playboy (according to Wikipedia, specifically intended for a book entitled Sugar & Spice). The whole thing got bogged down in litigation–the New York Times online archive, thankfully, has the story about the court case. And we censored the photo because we care.
