I don’t think it would exactly come as a surprise to anyone to learn that Kendall Jenner is pretty good at dressing herself—I mean, she is a model and a product of the usually-on-point Kris Jenner, after all. Sure, she’s prone to her occasional slipup (crop tops on Easter? Really?), but overall, it’s clear that she knows what she’s doing. That’s why I was so surprised when I heard that she had tried out the eternally-dreaded culotte trend. They’re almost impossible to wear well, so I was a little bit horrified as I hunted down the pics. But as fate would have it, Kendall managed to do the impossible: she made culottes look awesome.

She wore a pinstriped matching culotte-and-strapless-crop-top set with Sophia Webster sandals out and about in Los Angeles, and she looked like a total fashion queen. I mean, really, how many people do you know that could pull off such an on-trend and of-the-moment outfit without looking like they were wearing a costume? She kept her hair simple, and even though the shoes are a bit on the wild side, they still manage to look somewhat understated and let the clothes do the talking. The all-black aviator sunglasses are pretty sleek too—I might run out and grab myself a pair now even though I already have gold-rimmed ones.

As cool as she looks, though, I don’t know if I’m ready to give culottes a chance. They kind of fall into the same category as harem pants and drop-waist anything for me—they’re awful and generally don’t look good on the average human being. I think Kendall’s height (and, obviously, the fact that she’s a professional model) contribute in large part to how great these look on her. All that volume needs somewhere to go, and the extra five+ inches she’s got on me definitely help her carry it off. Still, I’ll give it to her: She almost made a believer out of me. Almost. Maybe next time, Kenny.
