It’s a good thing I live so close to a hospital, because Kylie Jenner might literally kill me. If you’ve been near the Internet this week, you know that she posted the above photo to her personal Instagram, as well as the official Kylie Cosmetics one, with the simple yet wildly unhelpful caption, “4/1.” It was pretty safe to assume that she was launching a new product, but what would it be? Guesses ran the gamut from eyebrow products to a contour kit, but yesterday, Kylie set the record straight. Her newest venture outside of her world of matte liquid lipsticks is lip gloss. I can only assume that, in the words of Lil Mama, they’ll be poppin’.
In true Kylie fashion, she took to just about every single social media platform to make the announcement, the newest and most talked-about of which was the music-free music video she made to promote the three new glosses. Check it out below, but be warned: it’s…something:
Honestly, there are no words, except I’m a writer so of course there will be some words. Is Kylie suggesting that consistent use of her new glosses will turn you into some kind of criminal? Is the girls’ throwing money into the air at the end of the video a metaphor for all the girls who dropped an exorbitant amount of cash on her Lip Kits? Are bandanas in again? WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?
While you all mull that over, let’s get down to the facts. There will be three lip gloss shades to start, all in varying nude shades and labeled with only mildly irritating monikers such as “Like,” “Literally,” and “So Cute.” The packaging, it seems, isn’t all that different from her Lip Kits:
Ever the kind soul, she posted swatches of each shade to Instagram:
I’m pretty surprised at how pigmented these glosses seem. In my experience, glosses are generally more sheer, with the greater focus being on the shine factor. Based on these swatches alone, I’d classify these glosses as shiny versions of her liquid lipsticks, but luckily, Kylie posted another video to the ‘gram highlighting the products’ application:
The brush for these glosses is a legit brush, not the fluffy doe tip applicator found in her Lip Kits. This is pretty common practice for lip gloss packaging—MAC‘s cult-fave Lipglasses have the same applicator. It seems like a pretty thick formula, which probably isn’t ideal if you weren’t a gloss lover to begin with, and there’s no way to tell whether or not they’ll be sticky, so fingers crossed that they’ll be as smooth as her lipsticks.
And now for the nitty gritty. If her Instagram captions are to be believed, Kylie will launch these new glosses today, April 1, though we can’t be certain about the time. If you go to the Kylie Cosmetics website, you’ll get the following landing page:
This same message appears for a few hours before she restocks all her Lip Kits, so if you’re really serious about snagging these glosses, I’d recommend standing by the site and refreshing every so often. We also can’t be sure as to whether this restock includes only the new glosses or if all eight Lip Kit shades will be available for purchase, so stay tuned for info on that. According to her latest Instagram post on the subject, each gloss retails for $15, which is actually a pretty fair price for a luxury gloss (the aforementioned MAC glosses come with the same price tag).
It’s been a while since we’ve seen Kylie rock anything other than a matte lip, so I’ll admit that these glosses did come as a bit of a surprise. I mean, sure, she wasn’t going to jump straight from lips to eyes—a girl needs to establish a monopoly over one part of the face before making moves toward another, you know? With matte liquid lipsticks, glosses, and a nail polish collaboration under her belt, though, it’s only a matter of time until you’ll be able to say, “Oh, my makeup? It’s all courtesy of King Kylie.”
What do you think of the new Kylie Cosmetics lip glosses? What do you hope she does next? Tell us in the comments!
