new lip kits

Well, friends, the world is officially a cruel, cruel place. You know how I know that? Because Kylie Jenner‘s new Lip Kit shades went on sale last Friday, and they sold out before I could buy them. Again. Honestly, I’ve never been so personally offended in my entire life. I checked all of the Kylie Lip Kit social media accounts that morning for any news of the launch, and I hadn’t seen anything, but I guess I checked too early because not three hours later, there I was, screaming at the little Sold Out tab staring at me from my computer screen, just mocking me. I’m still not over it. I’ll probably never be over it.

Because just look at how pretty these new colors are:

L-R: Posie K, Koko K, Mary Jo K

I mean, come on now. The original three shades were nice, ’90s-esque neutrals and all that, but I’m a huge sucker for a good matte red, and even more of a sucker for a matte dusty rose. Clearly, Kylie is just out to completely destroy my existence, and I’d be okay with it if she and the rest of the world would just let me purchase my Lip Kits in peace, but they can’t, so I’ll just be over here like:

I’ve learned that the best way for me to channel all of that rage is by finding dupes, which, not to toot my own horn, I’ve been pretty good at in the past. So, without further ado (JK, there will be much more ado on my own, because I’ve literally never been so angry about anything makeup-related), here are a few (less expensive!) dupes for each new Kylie Lip Kit shade!

Koko K

The product shot on the Kylie Cosmetics website suggests that this is a pretty pink nude, but the swatch is more of a sandy nude, so this was a difficult shade to duplicate. That said, I think I’ve come pretty close:

Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick in Midi (Coloupop, $6)

Colourpop’s matte liquid lipsticks are always associated with Kylie’s Lip Kits, especially after the latter was accused of stealing the former’s colors and formulas. While those rumors have since been proved false, the Colourpop lippies are still awesome dupes for the Lip Kit shades, and at a fraction of the price.

Maybelline Color Sensational Vivid Matte Liquid Lip Color in Nude Thrill (Ulta, $7.99)

vivid mate

This is Maybelline’s newest lip color offering, and I’ve been looking for an excuse to try it. Now I finally one! Thanks, all the people who bought the Lip Kits before I could! Looks like you’ve done something nice for me after all.

Tarte Tarteist Lip Paint in Namaste (Sephora, $20)

We’ve already confirmed that these liquid lipsticks don’t have the staying power you might want, but you can’t deny that the color is a pretty close match.

Posie K

Oh, Posie K. How I love thee. You are truly a perfect pink, so perfect that I feel the need to talk directly to you as though you’re a sentient being and not a tube of lipstick.

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Aria (Sephora, $24)

I just snatched a sample of this color from our office stash the other day, and I immediately fell in love with it. It wasn’t until this morning that I realized it was a pretty near match to Posie K! Don’t you love it when life isn’t the worst?

Soft Matte Lip Cream in Prague (NYX Cosmetics, $6)

NYX’s Soft Matte Lip Creams were actually my first foray into liquid lipstick back when I was in high school and liquid lipstick wasn’t such a huge deal yet, and I’ve had a soft spot for them ever since.

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Mother (Sephora, $20)

If you haven’t tried one of Kat Von D’s liquid lipsticks yet, you need to get on that. The shade Lolita tends to get all the hype, but there are some hidden gems in the collection, like Mother, which, incidentally, is a very weird name for a lipstick.

Mary Jo K

It’s impossible to go wrong with a matte red lipstick like Mary Jo K. I mean, there’s a reason that MAC‘s Ruby Woo is a cult favorite, right? For the sake of keeping things fresh (and because Ruby Woo can’t technically be a dupe because it’s not a liquid lipstick), I won’t include that here, but just know that that’s always an option.

Liquid Lipstick in Candy Apple (Anastasia Beverly Hills, $20)

candy apple

People have been raving about ABH’s liquid lipsticks since the beginning of time, and while I may be a bigger fan of some of their more offbeat colors (if you’re ever buying a gift for me, please consider giving me a tube of “Paint”), this classic red is stunning.

Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain in 01 Always Red (Sephora, $14)

sephora 001

You might be surprised to learn that Sephora’s in-house collection is actually pretty amazing, especially in the liquid lipstick department. Plus, they’re a lot cheaper than the major brands that they sell, and the color variety is a little bit nuts, almost to the point of being overwhelming.

Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipstick in Redrum (Beautylish, $18)

Jeffree Star is more known for his more wild colors, but it wouldn’t be a good lipstick line without this classic red, which is very reminiscent of Mary Jo K.

And as an added (albeit obvious) bonus…

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Fiery (Sephora, $24)

This is the Internet’s favorite matte red liquid lipstick—the Ruby Woo of the liquid lipstick world, if you will. I would be doing the entire world a disservice if I didn’t include it.
