Lupita Nyong'o Marie Claire May 2014 quote

Once upon a time, the entire world simultaneously fell in love with a 30-year-old actress named Lupita Nyong’o. But of course, that is not where the story ends–not when you take into account her talent, poise, and propensity for consistently dressing like a goddess.

Many people have been wondering what’s next for the Oscar-winning actress, now 31. While we already know about her upcoming gig as the face of Lancome, it’s hard not to wonder what she will be up to after an incredibly busy awards season that featured about a billion and a half beautiful looks and loads of admiration for her incredible performance in 12 Years A Slave (as well as being the best, albeit teensiest, part of Nonstop). And she’s got answers to those questions (sort of)! Prepare to fall in love all over again when you read the following quotes from her interview with Marie Claire.

1. Despite now being considered a heavy-hitting style icon, she’s honest.

“I wasn’t a follower of fashion. It was a world unknown. Then I met my stylist, Micaela Erlanger … and we came to interpret my style. I don’t dress to impress; I don’t feel that pressure.”

2. She’s also honest about being considered a total hottie.

“Being called gorgeous is not a bad thing! But at the same time, I don’t want to thrive on people’s opinions of me.”

You know how it feels kind of weird to want people to think you’re beautiful even when you may dislike beauty standards sometimes and wish it didn’t feel like you’re supposed to cater them? I feel like this is a very articulate response to that little dilemma.

3. She gets starstruck, too.

“I met Sidney Poitier, who has been someone I’ve looked up to and a blessing from afar. It was an incredible thing and something that I hold very dear to my heart.”

4. And she gets anxious about waiting for her category during awards shows.

“I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. It’s an internally loud moment. It’s not even about the outcome; it’s about the agony of the unknown. It’s like waiting for test results in a hospital.”

I mean, I have no idea what it’s like to wait for results of, say, a SAG Award or an Academy Award, but…y’know. I’ve waited for tests, job results and bad news–normal stuff like that, which we all have and it’s heart-pounding. It’s nice to hear from somebody who’s seemingly calm all of the time that it’s actually terrifying. To be fair, I wouldn’t wish being up for an award on my worst enemy because they’re my worst enemy, but I get what she’s saying.

5. She’s realistic!

“In due time, what I should do next and what I want to do next will reveal themselves. I am not in the business of trying to top this year—that’s virtually impossible.”

I love this quote in particular because I think that upon receiving mainstream success, most entertainers are pushed into whatever roles will continue garnering attention (ahem, Aaron Paul a la Need For Speed, among innumerable others) so they can keep climbing and climbing. Lupita, on the other hand, is being realistic; most actors will not, in fact, receive multiple Oscars and have that type of mass admiration paid to them forever. This shows just how intelligently she’s handling her career, which is exactly why I believe she likely will continue performing well in perfectly-chosen roles–just one more reminder that she’s the type of actor Hollywood needs.
