DuJour Magazine's Jason Binn Celebrates Lupita Nyong'o Cover With Scott Sartiano And Richie Akiva - Inside

We’ve been completely obsessed with Lupita Nyong’o ever since we saw her unbelievable performance in 12 Years A Slave, and her new interview with Essence just solidifies our fangirliness. Not only is she a stunning actress and one of our red carpet faves, but it turns out her approach to hair and beauty is majorly relatable.

Nyong’o tells the magazine the story behind her signature short haircut, and, just a warning, but it’s going to make you fall deeper in love with her:

I didn’t always wear my hair short. In my adolescence I always had long hair and it was relaxed. After the age of 19 I just got really fed up with going to the salon and it taking so much effort to look presentable before you leave the house. So one day I decided to cut it off and my mother was unamused. But she came around.

I’ve always admired an IDGAF attitude when it comes to hair, and it’s especially awesome when famous black women don’t allow our culture’s bullshit beauty standards to stand in the way of them doing whatever they want with their own looks. Lupita is a nothing short of a classy badass.

Her interview gets even more charming, too, as she reveals that her flawless Hollywood image is far from her IRL persona:

I don’t wear makeup when I’m not working on the red carpet. Except for a night out here and there, but I try to give my skin a break.

I mean, preferring the natural look isn’t a virtue, and there’s nothing at all wrong with being the glam type in your everyday life, but this whole interview is kind of making me want to watch movies with her in sweatpants.

You should call me, Lupita. I have the first season of Degrassi on DVD and like a ton of Wheat Thins in my pantry, and I haven’t exactly washed my hair this week. Let’s chill.
