For the last few weeks I’ve been on a quest. A quest to find the perfect shade of red lipstick, aka one that doesn’t make me look like Homie the Clown.
For years, I’ve toyed with the idea of wearing a bright or dark red lip, but I was always afraid that I would look silly, even though people tell me I have the coloring for it (well, my mom tells me that anyway), or that it would be obnoxious on a date. But now that I’m married and DGAF about annoying anyone (sorry Don!) AND But after seeing a resurgence in red lips this fall, I decided to take the plunge and find a good shade. Thus this epic journey began (mostly to Rite Aid or the mailbox to pick up a box from Amazon).
I started out with a lip gloss, Model Co. SHINE Ultra Lip Gloss, because I think a true red lip is pretty daunting. I was excited by the name of this shade, Showgirl Red, but the results were less than satisfying.
Still hoping to find a decent red lipgloss, I next tried Aqua Lacquer Pop in Splashing Scarlet. The applicator for this is really cool, it’s a bendy piece of plastic that makes precise application really easy. I wanted to love this SO much, and I do…except for the shade.
This product was a bit closer to red, but still on the pink side. It was also difficult to get even. I thought maybe the issue was the applicator, so I tried a lip brush and even a q-tip but nope, nada. I have a feeling this would be great over a regular lipstick, rather than alone.
Next I tried the Be A Bombshell Lip Crayon in Shameless, which according to reviews online is great for layering to get the desired depth and color. I like that it goes on pretty sheer, and you can build up to a more intense color, which is great if you’re prone to making mistakes (*cough* ME *cough*). When I bought this, I was looking for a deeper, almost burgundy shade, and I think this hit the mark.
I would describe this shade as “Wino Lips,” a look I know all too well. Dammit, now I want some wine. The only thing is, this isn’t really a true red, now is it? So I kept looking for a more femme fatale-type shade, (ie: something that a hooker from the wild west would wear).
The Cailyn Tinted Lip Balm in Big Apple ended up being my second favorite pick. I know this says lip balm, so you’re probably thinking that it’s going to be sheer or wimpy looking. Well, you’d be wrong because this was one of the more intense shades that I tried out. I have to note that I want to make sweet, sweet love to the applicator, and make tons of little applicator babies. Because it’s SEXY.
This shade is a robust, matte, true red that is easy to apply and forgiving if you make a mistake. It has the texture and consistency of a lip balm, but stands up like a regular lipstick. I am definitely a fan.
The Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Beso is my all time favorite (all time being about a month, since I was too lame to try these shades before).
This lipstick goes on creamy and dries to a perfect matte. The color is intense, but still light enough at first to build to a deeper red, and when they say long-lasting they are not lying. The picture above was taken before lunch. The picture below after eating a salad, a bowl of vegetable soup and a roll (plus a diet coke):
The only issue I had with this product was that it’s SUPER liquidy when you put it on. You gotta make sure not to have too much on the applicator when applying it. It dries fast, too, so you want to make sure to correct any mistakes quick, or it will be a pain to get off. Otherwise, I think this might be the perfect lipstick. I think I’m in love *SWOON.*
