Los Angeles native Julianne Kaye always knew she was going to have an unconventional job. “My dad is a well-known hair stylist who worked with Diana Ross, Rita Hayworth, and Rita Wilson, and my mom was a fashion designer and illustrator,” she said. “It’s safe to say I wasn’t going to be a doctor.”

Julianne got her start in the entertainment industry as an actress, and she made the switch to makeup artistry when she realized she wanted something more steady. “I always loved drawing, sketching, and especially makeup,” she said. “I would rip out pictures from magazines, study them, and try to recreate the looks on myself and my friends. It just made sense to become a makeup artist.”

Today Julianne is one of the most sought-out makeup artists in the game, having worked with Gisele Bündchen, Nicole RichieKelly Osbourne, and Gigi Hadid to name a few (fun fact: Julianne transformed Gigi into “Slay-Z” for Taylor Swift’s  “Bad Blood” music video). Despite her current success, the most surreal moment of Julianne’s career came almost 15 years ago when she realized she was working with the most famous woman in the world. “I started working with Britney Spears in 1999, but she really wasn’t a big deal then,” Julianne said. “It just kind of happened over night—one day we were cool to walk around the mall, and the the next day we literally had to be let out the back door of a store into an alley because we were being chased by a bunch of fan girls.”

jk 2Remember the 2001 Video Music Awards, when Britney and then-boyfriend Justin Timberlake showed up in their iconic matching denim outfits? Julianne was the genius behind Britney’s beauty look that night.

So who better than the woman behind some of Britney’s most iconic makeup moments to teach us all a thing or two about the best products on the market today? I asked Julianne to share her daily beauty routine and some of her favorite makeup brands. Here’s what she had to say:

My beauty routine mostly consists of serious skin care. I’m always doing masks, peels, exfoliating, and moisturizing. I feel like my skin looks the best when it’s just radiant, so I pretty much only do a tinted moisturizer, a little mascara, cream blush, and gloss—that’s it. It really just takes about five minutes. At my age, I just want to look like a better version of myself, but I do always have fun with major glam when I go on camera.

I have so many favorite makeup brands. I love Armani for foundation, Laura Mercier for concealer and powders, Charlotte Tilbury for eye palettes, and Sigma for brushes.”

And here are the products that Julianne always keeps on hand in her beauty bag:

“I always have Colorescience Sunforgettable powder in my bag because it’s basically sunscreen and makeup. I wear 1-Day Acuvue Define Brand Contact Lenses in Natural Sparkle every day because they make me feel extra pretty. I also have a Stowaway makeup bag because I can literally create a full face with all the miniature-sized pieces in a pinch for a last-minute meeting.”

So, what’s next for Julianne? “I get to scratch things off my bucket list every year, which is probably the reason I keep going. I suppose the ultimate goal would be to win an Oscar for makeup!”
