When it comes to celebrities who wear lots of makeup on a regular basis — Lady Gaga, Adam Lambert, Insane Clown Posse (teehee) — it is often surreal to see them without any on. It is not as though they look bad or ugly or unhealthy without cosmetics on; it’s that we are so used to them, we can’t help but feel a little perplexed when reminded that these individuals were not born with eyebrow filler and full face paint. That’s what makes Marilyn Manson‘s recent cameo on Eastbound & Down awesome, but weird.
Manson plays an employee at a roller-rink who skates over to the table that Kenny Powers (Danny McBride) is arguing at with his wife April (Katy Mixon). Here’s the full clip:
Apparently, Manson has been an avid watcher of the show for a while. In 2010, McBride told MTV that the rockstar has contacted him as a fan in the past:
“He sends me weird emails in the middle of the night of what he’s watching on TV, and you can hear him giggling in the background. One time he literally sent me a Peanuts special I guess he was watching, sometimes it’s Eastbound, infomercials, anything.”
I’m not gonna lie, I sometimes forget Marilyn Manson is actually a fairly adorable person. While he has done some questionable things at his performances that I do not necessarily support, I have been fond of him since I cuddled with my 10th grade boyfriend as we watched an interview of Manson discussing his political opinions, as well as his interview in Bowling For Columbine. He seems a little scary to some people, and it can be easy to forget that he’s just a dude wearing a lot of makeup and contacts who happens to be a musician. And a well-spoken, intelligent one at that.
Here, on Eastbound & Down, he’s even more pared down, wearing no makeup (well, no makeup in the sense that he’s likely got natural makeup on for the camera) and a tacky button down and silly shorts. Nice.
