Back in 2011, the mother of Sessilee Lopez, Janice Celeste, was promoting her book about raising successful models. During an interview, the subject of eating disorders came up and Celeste claimed she knew of girls eating cottonballs dipped in orange juice to feel full. Everyone was appropriately horrified. No one was particularly surprised.
More recently, former Vogue Australia editor Kirstie Clements was promoting a tell-all called The Vogue Factor, which describes a similar activity–young models were staying full with tissue papers. “Apparently they swell in your stomach,” she said.
But model Katia Elizarova may have one-upped everyone on the horrifying diet tip when she told the Sunday Times she saw her peers pull out their own teeth to look thinner. Elizarova (who is promoting a new reality TV show, it should be noted) recalls:
“When I was in Japan they weighed me every day after lunch, so I felt horrible,” she says. She insists that most models are naturally very slender and eat healthily. “But I did know girls who were bulimic, who used cocaine to make their cheeks hollow. Some girls pulled out their teeth to look thinner.”
While that sounds completely awful in every way, we don’t exactly buy it–wouldn’t that destroy a model’s career in the longterm? Then again, most of them don’t have careers in the longterm. *Shudder*
