Tim Burton is going to be upset he didn’t do this first. The Daily Mail is reporting that Sofia Coppola has cast androgynous model Andrej Pejić in her new version of The Little Mermaid. (Too bad Tim didn’t think to do a Little Mermaid film either, because how creepily awesome would that have been?)
Details of the project are scare, Andrej is the only one confirmed for the movie. She will be playing one of Ariel’s sisters, specifically number four. I’m sad that Andrej didn’t get cast in the lead role because she would have made a brilliant Ariel. Though maybe she didn’t make the cut because she couldn’t dye her Khaleesi blonde hair red because of all her beauty contracts? I would have been fine with a blonde Ariel though, especially if it was Andrej. And that is saying something because The Little Mermaid is one of my favorite Disney movies.
I don’t remember too much of Ariel’s sisters except for that one with the spiky crown, but I’m happy she was cast in the first place. The fashion world has embraced the androgynous model and it looks like the film industry will embrace her as well. (As they should.)
This isn’t Andrej’s first acting role. She was in David Bowie‘s “The Stars (Are Out Tonight)” music video alongside Tilda Swinton. Not a bad way to transition from magazine covers to acting. With both film credits on her résumé, Andrej might be the first model other than Cara Delevingne‘s promising attempt, to trade photos for video, and not fail epically.
The have yet to state a release date for the film, so until then, I look forward to hearing the other casting choices. I’m just going to put one name out there: Lupita Nyong’o.
