We’ve had strobing, tontouring, glitter strobing, thermal makeup, chroming and about 5,000 other variations of how to define and highlight your face. And now we have one more to add to the list: neon strobing. It’s the latest Instagram beauty trend to go viral and it’s one that isn’t for the faint-hearted.

Allure reports that the trend was created by makeup artist Dezzy Lopez. The look involves using bold colored highlighters to give you a glow that a neon sign cannot compete with.

The trend is similar to thermal highlighting, but neon strobing differentiates itself because the colors are brighter and often only a few are used. Another key distinction is that neon strobing does not blend the colors. It’s about bold swipes of color that stand out against your skin. Think about a neon light reflecting off your face and that’s the look.

Of course the key thing is products. A lot of traditional highlighters lack the opacity to create the look. Plus, colored highlighters are something that makeup brands are just starting to add to their collections. Dezzy frequently creates his prismatic shades and you can take his lead by mixing your go-to highlighter with a bold pigment or even an eyeshadow.

The other thing about neon storbing is that while it looks amazing on Instagram, it’s not the kind of look that most of us could get away with for everyday. For a fun night out? Definitely. But in the harsh light of day, the neon look might lose a bit of its luster, just like neon signs do.
