For a long time, Olivia Palermo existed as that nebulous creature “red carpet fixture,” “street style star,” “socialite,” or (best of all) “it-girl.” You’ll notice how none of those designations mean anything? She then added model to the resume and fronted some campaigns (Mango, Hogan) but we figured she’d just go on being pointless, maybe “design” a collaboration or two, and always be “that girl from that horrible reality show.” The City, was it?

Now she’s shown us, however, by inking a deal with Rochas. Even WWD doesn’t know what to make of it, leading the news with, ““It” girl Olivia Palermo will be the face of the next Rochas fragrance.” She is elsewhere referred to as “a front-row fashion-show fixture, [a] reality TV personality, model and socialite.”

We know nothing more about the fragrance, which will be unveiled in some capacity at Paris Fashion Week later this month, but we do know that Rochas fragrances are huge in Europe.

Is this a legitimizing move for Palermo, or is she still treading water as America’s Alexa Chung?
