Last night was the 88th Annual
Mad Max-Fury Road Awards Oscars, and it was certainly a night to remember. From Lady Gaga‘s beautiful performance of her nominated song, “‘Til It Happens To You,” to Leonardo DiCaprio FINALLY winning his Best Actor award (did anyone else wish he’d started his speech by saying, “It’s been 84 years…”?), it was definitely a night to be remembered. Also, I’m officially starting a petition to have C-3PO, R2-D2, and BB-8 host next year’s show.
And, of course, beyond all the show’s memorable moments, there was some stunning fashion and even more stunning beauty, and I mean that in both the best and worst possible way. Last night’s beauty looks featured some big hits and even bigger misses. Let’s talk about them:
1. Saoirse Ronan
It was love at first sight with Saoirse Ronan’s look. The smokey eye was the perfect touch, and keeping everything simple and adding a pair of mismatched earrings really made the whole look.
2. Brie Larson
When I was little, cobalt blue and magenta was my favorite color combination, so it makes me unreasonably happy to see that combo on a first-time Oscar winner. It makes me think that I was doing something right back in the second grade. Also, I’ll never get over the color of this dress.
3. Lady Gaga
Monochromatic makeup is big nowadays, and Lady Gaga pulled it off flawlessly. She’s also one of the few people in Hollywood (aside from Dita Von Teese) who can pull of the old Hollywood glamour hairstyles and not have it look costume-y.
4. Chrissy Teigen
Chrissy Teigen’s simple makeup was the perfect complement to her beautifully beaded (yet admittedly busy) dress, but her braid is what made this whole look work. Really, leave it to Chrissy to make a relatively casual fishtail bride look glamorous.
5. Rachel McAdams
Can we all just agree that Rachel McAdams is a national treasure? The subtle green eyeliner on her waterline was just the right amount of color to add to, not overwhelm, her already bright overall look. And the new platinum blonde hair just proves that there’s no hair color that she can’t pull off.
6. Charlize Theron
Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to wake up in the morning looking like Charlize Theron. It must be a pretty exciting life.
7. Alicia Vikander
I really have to hand it to Alicia Vikander: I never thought I’d see someone pulling off a hun (a half-bun) at any awards show, let alone the Oscars. Talk about a memorable look to pull out for her first Best Supporting Actress win.

1. Rooney Mara
I first looked at Rooney’s look and was like, “Okay, makeup’s great, but that weird, teeny tiny bun. Huh.” And then I saw what was waiting for us when she turned around:
Just…no. This isn’t the first time Rooney (or, well, Rooney’s hairstylist) has tried to make this veritable horse’s mane of buns happen, and it’s not going to happen.
2. Daisy Ridley
No offense to Daisy here—her Chanel gown was easily one of the best of the night—but that hair was just kind of stupid. From the front, it looked like a nice neat bun, and I was pretty down for it almost immediately, but then she turned around and I noticed that weird rattail-esque thing sticking out, and it looked like a mistake, like part of her hairstyle had fallen out and no one bothered to fix it or tell her about it.
It’s just not cute.
3. Sofia Vergara
Everything about Sofia Vergara’s look last night, from the over-the-top, tulle-covered Marchesa dress to the bump-it-adorned low ponytail just screams bad Mother of the Bride. Or, as Jillian put it, “the mother of the groom that so badly wants to the be center of attention because she doesn’t like that her son is getting married and leaving her alone.”
4. Sarah Silverman
Okay, so I’m kind of splitting hairs (no pun intended) here, because I really thought Sarah Silverman looked beautiful last night. But that weird, helmet-like swoop was just not a good look. It looks like the kind of hairstyle a teenager would wear to prom or homecoming when they were trying to cover up a breakout on their forehead.
5. Olivia Wilde
You know how Lady Gaga pulled off the monochromatic makeup look earlier? Well, if Lady Gaga’s look is a how-to course in beauty, Olivia Wilde’s is a how-NOT-to. Which is a shame, really, because her hair was lovely, as is her general existence.
