We love selfies and always want to take as good a picture as we possibly can, but we really don’t think plastic surgery is the answer. But apparently young people are apparently flocking to physicians in droves to get treatments and surgeries just so they’ll look better on Instagram. (Isn’t that what all the filters are for, anyway?)

According to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstuctive Surgery, one in three cosmetic surgeons said they had seen an increase in requests for plastic surgery procedures from customers who said they were altering their faces to look better online.

“Social platforms like Instagram, Snapchat and the iPhone app, which are solely image based, force patients to hold a microscope up to their own image and often look at it with more self-critical eye than ever before,” said Dr. Edward Farrior.

Fifty-eight percent of doctors surveyed said they’d seen the number of patients under 30 requesting plastic surgery and injections increase in the past year.

Plastic surgery and other beauty procedures are a personal choice, and we stand by every person’s right to make that decision for themselves. But it still makes us really sad to hear that young people are actually considering plastic surgery just to look a smidge prettier on Snapchat. That just seems awfully far to go for something that was supposed to be fun.

We all want to take the most epic selfies, but plastic surgery won’t make your pictures more compelling or sharable. If you truly want to take a truly epic selfie, we recommend following the lead of these selfie winners:

1. Document an extreme, life-changing moment, like this plane crash survivor.

2. Be an immortal style icon like Jackie Kennedy, whose casual mirror selfie is one of the most stylish ever.

3. Document something crazy, like Miley Cyrus’ painful-looking inner-lip tattoo.
