A new plastic surgery trend has us feeling all kinds of feelings today: a woman has had a small platinum sequin implanted into her eye. Her eyeball. I’m sorry. I’m sorry that I have to bring this tragedy to you today, but I’m a journalist with integrity and I have to report the news, no matter how stomach churning.
Apparently the procedure has never been done in New York before, which leads me to wonder where the hell else people are sticking glittery metal into their eyeballs. Lucy Luckayanko decided to have a sequin implanted into her eyeball so that she could display a certain je ne sais quois. She says that it’s “going to be a conversation maker. I will be able to tell people. It will be unique. It will be sort of my unique factor.” In terms of conversation, what happened to normal body mods like labia piercings and face tattoos?
Apparently, the procedure costs $3000, which seems like a steep price to pay to permanently have something stuck in your eye. The implant is a special shiny object called Safesight jewelry, and I’ve gleaned from its name that it’s jewelry that’s safe to jam into your eyeball.
While the jewelry had not been approved by the FDA and the American Academy of Ophthalmology advises against it, Dr. Emil Chynn of Park Avenue Laser Vision thinks the procedure is “just another way to advance the science of ophthalmology.” As for the health risks? “She could have a little bit of local bleeding. That could go away in a couple days or couple weeks. She could have an infection but we’ll prevent that with antibiotics.” That doesn’t sound super encouraging to me, but what do I know? My eyes are boring and full of eyes and not glitter.
Eye bleeding aside, Luckayanko seems happy with the procedure, although her friends seem to be split. She says:
“50 percent of my friends are like what is it? Why do you need it oh my god are you crazy? You’re going to put something in your eye! But 50 percent of my friends are like oh my god it’s super cool.”
Incidentally, I can’t resist a good pun so I want to give credit where credit is due. Fox 5 just couldn’t help themselves and treated themselves to every eye pun in the book:
“Luckayanko already has a twinkle in her eye, but now she is adding some real bling.”
“So keep an eye on this new eye jewelry procedure.”
“Though it may not be for everyone, as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”
I’m having trouble thinking about this without associating it with all of the times I’ve had meltdowns putting my contacts in (our own Meg Malone had a similar meltdown this very morning), but I’m trying to be laissez-faire about this. Also I used French twice in this article, because I am fancy. It makes me sad that Luckayanko felt she wasn’t unique before she became SparkleEyez(TM), but if she’s happy, I’m happy.
