Robyn Lawley–she of the Italian Vogue coverswatershed Ralph Lauren campaigns and general goodness and decency–stopped by the 2013 American Ballet Theatre Opening Night Spring Gala last night and looked stunning in a strapless beige cocktail dress and matching ankle boots. Please admire how amazing she looks.

…Of course, we were supposed to make the headline “Plus Size Model Robyn Lawley Something Something” but we couldn’t do it without at least quotation marks.

While the Wilhelmina-repped beauty is indeed a plus size model–and works very successfully as such in her field–it feels really marginalizing to designate her that way outside of matters pertaining directly to her job. Robyn Lawley is a model–to brands and casting agents, she may be “plus-sized”–but we’d hope that those of you who are not casting agents see nothing but an exceptionally beautiful lady.

For example, look at her hair:

It is exquisite.

Anyway, this whole classification thing is so asinine–on the one hand, people know Lawley as a plus sized model and are interested in her (at least in part) because of that designation and what it represents… be it positive change in the industry, or a manifestation of just how extreme and toxic it is. On the other hand, calling her plus size only contributes to her otherness; when Miranda Kerr gets the bad Photoshop treatment on the cover of Marie Claire, the resulting headline isn’t “Straight Size Model Miranda Kerr’s Head Hovers Over A Bodystocking.”

But the most irritating thing about it is we just spent a whole post talking about how we talk about her size instead of how great she looks on the red carpet. So, we recommend just scrolling up a little and staring at her hair some more. Someday, things will be better.
