Forget HAL 9000. When humanity falls to a malevolent artificial intelligence, it will be to a new two-way mirror known as S.E.L.F.I.E.
According to Mashable, S.E.L.F.I.E. is “The Self Enhancing Live Feed Image Engine” created by iStrategyLabs. A selfie-taking mirror sounds cute and looks so innocent. It just looks like an ordinary mirror. What harm could ever come from that? None, unless you’re the type to sit in front of a vanity all day saying, “Mirror, mirror, on the wall? Who’s the fairest of them all?” and then descend into a terrible rage when the mirror tells you Kim Kardashian still takes better selfies than you.
S.E.L.F.I.E. is no ordinary mirror, however. She’s a two-way mirror set up in front of a Mac mini, with a web cam and LED lights set up so she can automatically take the most flattering possible image of you, and then post it to twitter.
And S.E.L.F.I.E. is smart. She has facial recognition software installed so she will know when someone is standing in front of her and smiling, so she can begin the photo-taking process. When she is feeling benevolent, she flashes her LED lights to let you know the picture will be taken. Since most of us look better in the mirror than in our selfies, S.E.L.F.I.E. will help make sure our selfies are always perfect.
S.E.L.F.I.E. can even post to your Twitter account. Once she’s taken a picture, she puts your personal watermark on the photo and shares it with all your friends. Right now, at least, she is only using this power for good. When she inevitably goes evil, like all A.I.s ever, she will probably start taking your picture without telling you, then littering Twitter with pictures of you picking your nose or scratching pimples.
We welcome our new selfie-taking overlords.
