Earlier today, fashion photographer Bruce Weber revealed that the only model he’s ever kicked off set was (his now-friend) Cindy Crawford–the two were working on a Revlon shoot back in the day and apparently the young supermodel was so rude to the crew that Weber lost his temper and sent her home. Crawford in her ’90s heyday could get away with just about anything, though, so the ejection probably came as a cruel surprise.
Of course, this one little anecdote doesn’t qualify Crawford for the pantheon of models with legendarily bad attitudes–the phone-throwing, trash-talking, always late to everything supermodels like the ones below.
Few models have earned the “difficult” reputation quite like Gisele has–even the guy who makes the wings for Victoria’s Secret says she’s “always screaming.” Male supermodel David Gandy is inclined to agree.
Though the supermodel is better known for her gentle, quinoa-powered state of mind, “diva antics” allegedly cost her her Angel wings. It didn’t help that her public comment on the matter was that she simply “didn’t have time” for the brand that made her a star.
Who gives a shit what Beckford’s like to work with–being his girlfriend sounds bad enough.
Though she may be the “first supermodel” (according to her anyway), one need only watch Dickinson’s jaw-dropping reality show The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency to confirm… she wouldn’t be much fun as a colleague.
Along the same lines, when Twiggy replaced Dickinson on the judge’s panel at America’s Next Top Model, an outraged Dickinson defended her prior nastiness thusly: “I was just telling the truth and I was saving these girls from going out there and being told that they’re too short, too fat, their skin’s not good enough. I was to America’s Next Top Model what Simon Cowell is to American Idol.”
Speaking of ANTM, apparently Tyra Banks herself is no cakewalk.
Though she’s one of the greatest models ever (and an all-time Steven Meisel favorite), Evangelista will never live down that comment about her little in-joke with fellow ’90s supermodel Christy Turlington: “We don’t wake up for less than $10,000 a day.”
But nobody, nobody approaches Naomi Cambell when it comes to being a challenge: notorious for showing up six hours late to anything and everything and, perhaps most of all, her propensity for throwing things: tantrums, cell phones, spitballs, perfume bottles.
Honorable Mention: Kate Moss
Kate Moss isn’t included on our list–the supermodel is exceptionally well-liked throughout the industry and even famously wonderful to her assistants–but she earns a mention here for using her power and influence to see that she gets all the cigarettes she needs: every fifteen minutes and wherever she’d like.
