On Monday, Tyson Beckford drew ire from people across the internet for making some gross comments about his girlfriend, Shanina Shaik, a now-Victoria’s Secret face he met while filming Make Me A Supermodel. Yes, even though Shaik was competing on a televised modeling contest, she was still a fixer-upper.

To refresh, here’s Tyson’s comment:

When I found her she was a regular girl. I helped place her with the right people, get her teeth cleaned, her body toned up. Everything changed and now everyone wants a piece of her. I hear people say, “You can do better than Tyson.” I’m like, “Really? Really?! I created her!”?

Now Shanina has responded… sort of. Frockwriter asked if she felt her career has been helped any by Tyson’s media profile (but didn’t ask if she thought it was a complete asshole thing to say). Doesn’t sound like there’s much love lost:

I don’t think so. Tyson and I really keep our work separate and every now and then we’ll go to events together. Sometimes we’re just trying to make time together, because I work so much. Sometimes I say ‘You’ve contributed to it’. But everything that I do with my work is separate. And also I never asked him for any help on anything. He just supports me and that’s all I want.

By the way, Shanina is comically beautiful. Here she is walking for Chanel:

Not that it matters, of course: no woman (person!) deserves to hear that her significant other “got [her] teeth cleaned and toned [her] up.” Especially via the media.
