If you’ve been watching/reading coverage of the Miss Universe pageant’s dealings with transgender contestant Jenna Talackova and wondering “but what does Miss Universe owner Donald Trump have to say about it?” you’re in luck. The hairpiece-loving gazillionaire spoke with ABC’s Katie Couric earlier today about the controversy, and he was his usual, Trump-y self.

He opened by making a joke about Talackova’s lawyer Gloria Allred, who is known for representing plaintiffs in high-profile women’s rights cases, saying, “I did not know that she had a lawyer and especially Gloria Allred…In fact, had I known it was Gloria Allred, I probably would not have reversed my decision because, you know, Gloria is easy to beat.” Ha ha.

He then said something vague about how he’d looked to the laws of Canada (by which Jenna is a woman) to guide his decision. He also hinted that he might “decide to open up” the Miss Universe pageant officially to trans women, but when pressed on the issue, said that Jenna should be focusing on winning the Miss Canada competition right now. So basically, he hasn’t decided what he’s going to do yet, but he might still do the right thing. Should we send Donald Trump a virtual pat on the back? Not yet. But we should at least prepare for the possibility.
