barbie no make-up

Last week a picture of Barbie without make-up surfaced that got a lot of attention. In it, she seemed really, really, really haggard. She also magically sprouted braces, which is something that has never happened to me when I’ve removed my make-up, but maybe happens to some people. Maybe some people also grow scales, and other crazy things, and those people would do well to keep their make-up on forever.

We heard from Nickolay Lamm, who created new “Barbie without make-up” images and says:

A viral image of Barbie without make-up got me thinking: is this what Barbie would really look like without make-up? Ken is a pretty good looking doll. So, surely Barbie without make-up can’t be too different…

And, indeed, as Nickolay has depicted her, she’s a pretty good looking doll, too! Even if she is lacking dollface (dollface is defined by wearing blue eyeshadow, I think).

The Bratz don’t look bad, either:

bratz no makeup They do not, for instance, magically get braces. They even get to keep purple streaks in their hair if they initially have purple streaks there. Which is great for them, because it is how most people actually look when they remove their make-up.

They really only look like they have slightly less purple eyeshadow on.

Nikolay notes:

The real Barbie without makeup brings up a new point: if Barbie can look good without makeup, why doesn’t Mattel make dolls with a more natural look?

Umm, yes. Yes, that would be a good thing for Mattel to do, and we would probably stop producing images of Barbie that are only intended for shock value.
