Orange Is The New Black fans, we have got some seriously good news for you! Internet, meet Ruby Rose. She just joined the cast of everyone’s favorite Netflix series and we expect her to be all over the place in the very near future. Ruby is a model, DJ, and actress, but being multi-talented isn’t the only thing that makes her unique: she’s also openly gay, gender fluid, and heavily tattooed. And ridiculously hot. Long story short, we can’t wait to see her face everywhere! But we won’t lie, we’re especially excited to see her on one of our absolute favorite shows.
Now, to prep you for her incoming American stardom, here’s what you need to know about this stunning 28-year-old Aussie.
1. She’s from Australia.
More specifically, she grew up in Melbourne. So, in addition to being gorgeous and talented, she also has one o’ those charming accents from down under.
2. Yes, that’s her real name.
Ruby Rose was born Ruby Rose Langenheim in 1986 to 20-year-old Katia Langenheim, an artist, which explains why her name is so effing beautiful.
3. She came out as a lesbian at age 12.
And she’s dated some names you may already know, including America’s Next Top Model contestant Lola Van Vorst, model Lyndsey Anne McMillan, and model Catherine McNeil, among others. We would call her a modelizer, but she’s a model, so…
4. She basically does everything in the entertainment world.
She’s a DJ, a film and television actress, a model, a TV presenter, and probably about eight other things but Wikipedia said, “Hey, stop making everybody else feel bad” so she had to stop adding.
5. Homegirl has a ton of tattoos.
Not that we needed more proof that women can look absolutely stunning with lots of body modification, but hey, it’s always great to have another gorgeous celeb to throw in the face of those annoying people who say, “Tattoos aren’t feminine, wahhhh, your choices don’t reflect my personal views on sexinessssss.”
6. Her heart is massive.
Besides being talented, Ruby supports organizations advocating for animal welfare, youth mental health, and the fight against bullying.
7. You probably shouldn’t mess with her.
In 2012, Ruby won a charity boxing match after training for a mere three months. Those skills will presumably be useful to her role in Orange Is The New Black; let’s just hope she uses ’em on Pornstache.
8. She considers herself gender fluid.
After releasing a video titled “Break Free” wherein she transforms herself from appearing as a blonde woman to a man, she came out as gender fluid. What is “gender fluid,” you ask? Well, it’s a highly subjective description of one’s own gender, so let’s let her describe it:
On the topic of how she relates to the subject matter, Rose revealed she doesn’t see herself as either male or female.
“I am very gender fluid and feel more like I wake up every day sort of gender neutral,” she said.
“I cop a fair bit of flack for going from ‘such a babe to such a boy’. I wanted to share (that) story.”
While a person’s gender or sexuality should not be the most defining detail about them, it is nevertheless a huge deal that somebody towards the middle on the spectrum of sexuality is about to be on a show like OITNB. To be fair, it’s one of the only popular shows that already treats sexuality as an element of the characters’ multifaceted, complex personalities rather than the entire focus. But still, it’s awesome.
9. She was bullied as a kid.
Ruby was bullied emotionally, verbally, and physically by her classmates as a teenager to the point that she wound up in the hospital. In an interview with News.com.au, she explained:
“The whole school knew I was going to be beaten up that day, apparently, except me,” said Ruby. “I was at the University Cafe, across the road from school, with three friends. There were about 50 other students there. The gang started by just being rude to me and yelling the usual high-school stuff.”
One of the girls then picked up a metal chair and hit her in the head. “I didn’t see it coming. She was just smashing it against the back of my head. My mates tried to stop her but she kept going until management ran over and said ‘Enough!’. Security arrived and the police. It was a big deal. My head was bleeding. I had to go to hospital.”
Though she stated that her sexuality possibly contributed to the bullying, she also says she was “just a bit different.” Regardless, it’s horrifying no matter what the reasoning was.
10. You’ve probably already seen her face.
That good ol’ orange jumpsuit probably won’t be the first time you’ll have seen her. In addition to being the face of Maybelline in Australia, Ruby’s appeared in massive publications, including Cosmopolitan, Vogue Australia, In-Style, and Nylon. Plus, she’s heavily involved in the fashion world and even has her own collection, Milk and Honey Designed by Ruby Rose, as well as a designer collaboration with footwear brand Gallaz.
11. She can pull off purple hair like nobody’s business.
And, in all likelihood, all hairstyles, but I have to admit that since I dyed my hair pastel lilac, I’ve been a little obsessed with any celebrity who has or has had the same.
12. Her godfather is a boxing legend.
Lionel Rose, Australian boxing legend, is Ruby Rose’s godfather–thus making #7 make a whole lot of sense.
13. She’s engaged!
Sorry, ladies–Ruby’s got a fiancee. She’s engaged to Phoebe Dahl, granddaughter of Roald Dahl. While we are admittedly a little sad to report she’s taken, at least it’s with somebody who comes from a badass family and is in possession of literally perfect eyebrows.
