So, I know that we are all probably tired of anything patriotic, so this is the last thing, I promise. You’ll like it! It will make you like America more than you otherwise might! It is former First Lady Abigail Adams being excellent.
In a letter to her husband, John Adams, in 1776, she wrote:
“I long to hear that you have declared an independency. And, by the way, in the new code of laws which I suppose it will be necessary for you to make, I desire you would remember the ladies and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the husbands. Remember, all men would be tyrants if they could. If particular care and attention is not paid to the ladies, we are determined to foment a rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any laws in which we have no voice or representation.”
Yeah. Remember the ladies. And he actually did! That was regarded as a fair point.
John Adams replied:
“while it was well known that the Revolution had prompted children, slaves and apprentices to rebel, your Letter was the first Intimation that another Tribe more numerous and powerfull than all the rest were grown discontented.”
So, John Adams was a badass and an early crusader for women’s rights, and John Adams seems like a very nice guy. Good. We can all feel good about coming from a country they birthed, now.
