bossbSo, basically, you need to watch this.

Produced by Los Angeles’ Wisecrack (a media collective made up of comedians, academics and filmmakers), Boss Bitches of History is written and hosted by Sovereign Syre and Ela Darling, two sassy and hilarious adult entertainment industry performers. Fan of nerdy shows like “Epic Rap Battles of History” or “Thug Notes” (also Wisecrack)? You’ll love this.

Boss Bitches of History focuses on celebrating bad-ass women throughout history (like Cleopatra and Marie-Josèphe dite Angélique), not only because their stories were completely epic, but because they defied gender norms and societal expectations. To this day, their stories are told in the hopes of inspiring modern women to look back through the lens of time to discover these boss bitches’ feminism power and seductive smarts. The best thing about Boss Bitches of History is that it tells a pretty decent story with hilarious language and ridiculous references.

I watched the “Cleo-fucking-patra” skit first, and what immediately struck me was how feminist the entire thing actually was, without it sounding preachy. Very cool.

I loved the way they told the story of Marie-Josèphe dite Angélique (aka a “Ride or Die bitch). Angélique, a Portuguese slave, was eventually murdered during the 18th-century slave trade, but this was after she angrily burned down half of Montreal. I’d never heard of her before, and appreciated that the skit is down to illuminate the lives of women who may not be textbook-famous. They also could have stuck to a linear story, but they infused the skit with facts and details, which gave the entire piece geographical and historical context.
