If you’ve ever suspected, as I have, that one has to be deep, deep in the know, or deep, deep in an assignment from a major publication in order to gain access to Prince, you — and I — are right.

Why? Because the enigmatic pop superstar doesn’t have a phone.

During an interview with The Guardian, the artist reveals that not only does he hate digital music, he hates ringtones, and in fact rejects the notion of technology taking over real human emotions:

“I personally can’t stand digital music,” he says. “You’re getting sound in bits. It affects a different place in your brain. When you play it back, you can’t feel anything. We’re analogue people, not digital.” He’s warming to his theme. “Ringtones!” he exclaims. “Have you ever been in a room where there’s 17 ringtones going off at once?”

Does he have a ringtone?

“No,” he says, looking as offended as if I’d asked him if he drove a clown car. “I don’t have a phone.”

That’s the way you do it, people. That’s the way you debate.
