Here’s another one for the pile: onetime supermodel and former first lady of France Carla Bruni is the latest wildly successful woman to claim (boast, really) that she’s not a feminist. Now, before anyone bags on Carla Bruni because she’s 1) made a career out of being beautiful and 2) extended that career by marrying a powerful man, let it be said that we honestly don’t give a fuck if Carla Bruni doesn’t consider herself a feminist. She’s welcome to do that.
…What she isn’t welcome to do, though, is continue to misrepresent the whole movement by saying foolish, inaccurate things.
…In Vogue, no less.
Bruni sat down for a cover shoot and conversation with French Vogue for the December issue, in which she declared:
“My generation doesn’t need feminism. There are pioneers who opened the breach. I’m not at all an active feminist. On the contrary, I’m a bourgeois. I love family life, I love doing the same thing every day.”
Bummer about all the ladies in your generation who aren’t super rich and famous, though, right?
Look, it was nice of her to acknowledge those pioneers–that gifted her the very ability to dismiss them now–but we can’t abide yet another famous lady conflating “being a feminist” with “not liking men/raising children/cooking/crushing boners with ruthless efficiency.”
Call yourself whatever you damn well please, just don’t denigrate those who feel comfortable with the title by suggesting they hate “family life.”
Or, inexplicably, “doing the same thing every day.”
